In this middle of all of this, Athena tells Kane that he must go to London.
This is where the next evolution of the Supers really takes off.
The Supers series has always been dark, Part one was grim, with Richter tearing the wold apart, and it has never really let up. Part four is no exception, as our heroes find themselves on the other side of the world, facing off against Supers aligned with Atlas.
To make matters worse, this time, there are Supers with white eyes, instead of blue.
I was initially worried that this book was opening up more plot lines, without actually closing off some of the others, especially given that there are only 3 books left in the series. However, Rutherford does not disappoint, making the effort to give us plenty of material to chew through, as well as some Epic fight sequences again.
The fights are beautifully described, Rutherford is only improving with his descriptive skills of how the Supers are battling each other in various environments. This added with new and clever ways to try and defeat each other, not only with talents, but with tech as well, makes for some very interesting reading.
The other great thing about this book is that it finally gives some background into Athena, something that everyone who reads this series has been dying for- who is she, what is she, where did she come from, etc etc. Questions will be answered!!
The thing that has always made Rutherford standout has been his Characters, and this is again, no different.
Kane continues to battle on as ‘Tempest’, although, not really wearing his alter ego so much, struggling with his role as a Super, and the responsibilities it brings to his friends, family and the world. Selena, Drew, Doug and Eddie are there as his trusted side-kicks, but with more of a role this time, especially Eddie, who has more lines in this book than the other 3 combined I think. There is a real understanding of the difficulty that each of the characters is feeling, with the situation, the loss of family members, their inability to save people or strike back properly. But all the while, there is a constant drive to fight harder and keep going. This is in a large part driven by Kane, but also by each of them in their own quests for redemption and understanding in what is happening to them.
I don’t want to give too much away, so will not discuss anything more of the actual story, other than if you have been excited by the first parts, then you will definitely be interested in this as it is easily the best of the series he has written since he started. If you are a fan of this series, this is a must read not only for the brilliant story, but for the plots finally revealed.
