Into this volume has been compressed the quintessence of a colossal learning. It is a living human document, pulsating with the mental and spiritual vibrations of a profound thinker who takes knowledge for his province and reduces whole libraries to a single tome. --George Barron, Curator of the De Young Museum of San Francisco, in his tribute to this remarkable work.
Simply put, this is the most beautiful and complete occult book ever published. It represents a lifetime of research into the mythology, symbolism, and magical practices of countless cultures. From the secrets of Isis to the teachings of mystic Christianity, nearly every occult dogma imaginable is represented here. The book is full of giant illustrations, some of which fold out into a magnificent two-page splendor. This is the definitive guide to secret societies, famous figures, and more a must for every personal library. --Llewellyn New Times
From the Publisher
The Philosophical Research Society is a nonprofit organization founded in 1934 for the purpose of assisting thoughtful persons to live more graciously and constructively in a confused and troubled world. The Society is entirely free from educational, political, or ecclesiastical control. Dedicated to an idealistic approach to the solution of human problems, the Society's program stresses the need for the integration of religion, philosophy, and the science of psychology into one system of instruction. The goal of this instruction is to enable the individual to develop a mature philosophy of life, to recognize his proper responsibilities and opportunities, and to understand and appreciate his place in the unfolding universal pattern.

The best edition to get is the hardcover University Edition printed in 2008. BUT if you want a cheaper paperback, make sure you get the authorized 2000 reduced facsimile of the 1988 Diamond Jubilee edition from the Philosophical Research Society (PRS). It's the only edition in print that is a true reprint of the original typography and illustrations in their correct places. All other editions are re-typeset, and some cluster all the color illustrations together rather than at the beginning of each chapter where they belong. The Reduced Facsimile is also the only edition that was authorized by Hall when he was still alive, and the only edition that contains ALL the original illustrations.
The 2000 edition from PRS is very good quality with a sewn signature binding printed on heavy photo paper. DON'T get the Dover edition or the "Readers" edition!! Much of the value in this text is the beautiful typography and illustrations. It's not worth owning it otherwise. A cheap used copy of the facsimile edition can be easily found for under $10. I got mine for $2.99 and it's beautiful.
If you are a staunch 'Believer' then this book will upset you, as he traces back the roots of Christianity as well to ancient Egyptian religions and ties it all together brilliantly. The movies series ZEITGEIST used this information and other about world banking and religion controlling the world--if you haven't seen these--Netflix has em. GREAT RESEARCH even if the black screen between 'takes' comes on a bit too much--the information gleaned here in Manly Hall's work and expanded to include todays world control is all worth research to WAKE UP and get conscious in this life--not no longer be asleep nor a sheep and become who we ARE--awake Soul. WITHOUT THE RELIGION/GURU HYPE!
I bought this because THIS IS CHEAP. IT'S A TYPO RIDDEN COPY BUT THE PRICE IS RIGHT. IT HAS NO ILLUSTRATIONS WHICH MADE THE ORIGINAL AND 'OFFICIAL' COPIES PRICEY BUT GORGEOUS. There are a few black and white line type drawings but nothing of the spectacular plates and art--so this edition is a watered down CHEEEP bootleg:)
Yet for those of us not willing to spend 80-150.00 on a book--the INFORMATION CONTAINED THEREIN IS WORTH IT.
The idea that you can buy the kindle version for $1.99 is a mind-blowing paradigm shift in and of itself. However, I'm giving the e-version 4 stars instead of the 5 that the book certainly merits (and then some), because of the formatting. I've read through a few chapters, and skipped around a bit (this book is made for referencing, not necessarily for reading straight through) to see how they handled the conversion. Frankly it's a mixed bag.
Plus - the table of contents works okay. Without a searchable ToC, this book would be virtually unusable. So that part is fine.
Negatives - the physical book is filled with illustrations - tons of them. The ebook has some illustrations, but seems to be missing the bulk of what's meant to be there. This is not a minor omission. There are missing charts and graphs and maps and many full page/ color images. Also, in the physical book, every illustration has a long caption - sometimes using multiple paragraphs to explain it in context - but whenever you come to an illustration in the e-book, it gives you the full caption without delineating any difference from the regular text. The effect is that the book seems to lose it's train of thought to start talking about random things in mid paragraph. This would make it very confusing if you weren't aware of what it was supposed to look like in its original form. Actually, it makes it confusing either way. Readable, but it takes getting used to.
All in all, I'd recommend that you get a physical copy of this book to really enjoy and understand it. But for a $1.99, this is still a treasure trove of goodness... you just might have to work a little harder to take it in.
