Demonstrates deep Soviet involvement in American Communism

This is another terrific volume in that valuable and terrific series - "The Annals of Communism". The 92 documents provided in this book demonstrate clearly the way that American communism was used by the Soviet Union as a base of intelligence gathering. This is not to say that every American communist was disloyal, but that the funding and organization was provided from Moscow for purposes far from merely ideological.
There is also a very good discussion of the Soviet involvement in the American and Canadian brigades that went to the Spanish Civil War (there is another great volume in this series specifically on this, by the way). And more background on Elizabeth Bently, the Perlo Group and the early funding of early American communists such as John Reed (who received more than a million dollars).
There is only a bit here on Venona, Hiss, Greenglass, and the Rosenbergs, however. Although what is here is mostly summary material. There are other volumes you can turn to for more comprehensive and concrete discussions of these topics. This book does state their guilt with the view that Ethel Rosenberg was used as a wedge against Julius and called the government's bluff.
It is a very fine volume that I am glad to have in my library. There are two appendices: the first on the archival record and the second on the organization of the American Communist Party. There is also a list of selected readings and an index.

Étant un passionné d'histoire contemporaine et plus particulièrement intéressé par l'espionnage soviétique aux Etats-Unis des années 1930 à 1953 notamment en ce qui concerne l'infiltration du projet Manhattan par des espions soviétiques dont les plus célèbres sont Klaus Fuchs et Theodore Hal, et bien sûr du côte britannique Alan Nunn May, j'ai beaucoup consacré de temps à l'étude du programme secret américain Venona qui est à peu de chose près la contrepartie du projet Ultra de déchiffrage des messages chiffrés allemands pendant la seconde guerre mondiale. L'étude de la documentation Venona au travers des livres en anglais publié depuis 2000 (avec notamment the Haunted wood qui a lancé les révélations les plus fracassantes grâce a la collaboration d'un ancien du KGB qui a été autorisé à consulté des archives à Moscou avant que les portes ne se referment sous le règne de Vlad le Poutine, le Staline du pauvre d'esprit, m'a montré que si tous les membres du parti communiste américain n'étaient pas des espions, en revanche tous les espions étaient des membres ou des sympathisants du PCUSA. J'ai donc décidé d'en savoir plus et j'ai commandé ce livre passionnant. Ce livre donne une vision à peu près complète du PCUSA et sa lecture a été pour moi une source de connaissance particulièrement plaisante. Si vous avez accès à l'anglais universitaire je vous recommande vivement la lecture de ce livre extrêmement bien documenté. Au cours de toute mes recherches sur Venona et le PCUSA j'ai été stupéfié que l’œil de Moscou (correspondant du Komintern) pour ce parti était le communiste français Roger Marty, comme quoi le monde est petit mais peuplé de crapules.
