The Secret World of Johnny Depp: The Intimate Biography of Hollywood's Best-Loved Rebel Hardcover – June 1, 2006
From Publishers Weekly
While droves show up to see reclusive star Johnny Depp in the theaters, little is known about the unpredictable leading man's personal life; unfortunately, Goodall's attempt to go beyond the tabloid stories and Depp's bad boy image doesn't shed much light on the man or the talent responsible for some of modern Hollywood's most memorable characters. Goodall begins with Depp's troubled childhood and spends a considerable number of chapters discussing his films, but veers towards the sensational (and well-trod) in his discussion of Depp's engagement to Winona Rider and his relationship with model Kate Moss. A mix between a shallow biography and a detailed filmography with nothing new to add to the record, this volume is unlikely to satisfy.

The bad news: when I opened the cover to my copy, it started right out at page 27. The first 26 pages, plus whatever else should have been in the front of the book, were missing. I examined it closely--the pages hadn't fallen out or been torn out. The book appears to have been bound that way. (I have another book, unrelated, with the same issue--bought it for 25 cents at a used book store, and failed to examine it, so can't complain. Maybe sometimes automated equipment goes haywire.) Those of us who buy used books have to expect to take our lumps once in a while--used books are kind of a gamble. Overall, this particular flaw accounts for only two books out of maybe 10,000 used books I own, so it's a rare flaw.
Reading randomly in the rest of the book, I found the writing was not particularly well done. The author switched subjects without always remembering to give the reader a clue that the topic had changed, so the text seemed to jump around and was unclear at times. Had I not been so familiar with the subject, I would have gotten lost trying to follow jumbled subjects.
All in all, I feel this book is worth 42 cents--but not more.
