In her recent release, The 3 Secrets to Effective Time Investment, time coach Elizabeth Saunders tackles success in life by moving beyond what we've already learned about time management. I've long held that time management is the key to unlocking potential. This perspective has been influenced greatly by Stephen Covey's First Things First and David Allen's Getting Things Done. Yet for years, my unbalanced life has belied these dog-eared books, but not for lack of insight or intention. In The 3 Secrets, Elizabeth brings her approach for taming patterns of thought, emotion and behavior to the fore, and this is quickly resulting in an upward spiral of success for me, both personally and professionally.

At the core of the book are the three "secrets" that fundamentally extend common time management themes. Secret #1 is "Clarify Action-Based Priorities," which calls for moving beyond setting priorities to identifying, scheduling, and monitoring very specific actions (e.g., run three miles after work on Tuesday and Thursday). Inertia wins wherever there is ambiguity in your intentions... or in your calendar. Secret #2 is "Set Realistic Expectations," which exalts progress over perfection and especially over others' often misaligned expectations. This is an investment approach that builds success over time, not on the hope of a windfall. Secret #3 is "Strengthen Simple Routines." This takes the actions and expectations of #1 and #2 and makes them as automatic as possible by creating, practicing, and reinforcing habits. There is an entire chapter of "done-for-you" routines-everything from project planning to exercising, and from building relationships to buying groceries.

Now, back to thoughts and emotions.

In order to have a well-balanced life with a healthy approach to stress, it is effective to have an approach that also includes how one invests one's time. Elizabeth Grace Saunders wrote a book called "The 3 Secrets to Effective Time Management" - although I gleaned the main points of the book from a summary she put in the Harvard Business Review (HBR).

Approach - can't excel at everything:
Here's the secret: Your colleagues that perform with seemingly less effort have learned to recognize and excel in what really counts -- and to aim for less than perfect in everything else. In school, doing whatever it took to produce work at a level that would please teachers pays off. A great GPA gets rewarded with scholarships and job offers.

The rules changed in business. Doing A-work in everything limits success. One needs to focus more on one's strengths. I can achieve more success by fully leveraging my strengths instead of trying to shore up weaknesses. Realizing the importance of purposely deciding where I will invest more time and energy to produce stellar quality work and where less-than-perfect execution has a bigger payoff will provide more success and hence less stress.

In today's world of 24/7 access, frequent emails, and global business: no one has time for everything. Given the pace of work and the level of input in modern society, time management is dead. We can no longer fit everything in -- no matter how efficient we become. (This is what Saunders' book talks about).

If you can find the HBR article she wrote - read it first - and if it piques your interest, get the book. Otherwise - if you don't get anything out of her article - you won't like the book.

As I read through other Amazon reviews for this book, others agreed with my own thoughts that "this book is the one that I've been looking for!" and "this book provides the right mix of theoretical and practical time management advice."

In my case, this book was-- more or less, an "immaculate conception" since-- even though I had gone through Franklin Covey Training a few times, it hadn't transformed or enlightened me! Instead, the exact opposite had happened since I wound up feeling more exhausted, more overwhelmed and more ambivalent than ever!

Thus, simple words can't describe my admiration for Elizabeth's book since everything in it felt transformational and-- for the first time in my life, I found myself walking towards peace in a world where the reality that "time is money" was draining me of my essence.

The difference: while Stephan Covey's books seem focused on perfectionism-- the very path that killed me, Elizabeth used reflection to talk about why the average person ("me") got stuck and why a few simple "time investment strategies" changed their lives!

Besides that, the book provides so many accessible "on ramps" for getting people unstuck that anyone who reads this book won't walk away empty handed!

To Elizabeth: the journey that I took with you through this book was deeply satisfying; I felt more convinced than ever that I could remain human and, at the same time, be happier than ever!

Elizabeth Saunders has distilled wisdom garnered from years of coaching clients into this book. Most of us reading time management books are looking for systems, and she has some very good ones, combined with excellent tips and tricks on how to go about implementing them. But her biggest insight is really more holistic. Simply put, it is the converse of the Golden Rule: do unto yourself as you would do unto others. Frequently we beat ourselves up for failure to live to outrageous demands and unrealistic expectations that we would never foist upon others. If instead we nurture ourselves and treat ourselves with kindness, we will not only achieve more, but revel in our work. An excellent read with a refreshing perspective.
