The book needs to be organized better.

Overall I feel the book is obscured in what it wants to accomplish. The Author states that he wants to show us "patzers" (weak players) how to become "Grand Patzers" (strong players equivalent to 1800-expert level). Each chapter gives an element of something a Grand Patzer would have in his arsenal is skills. The author gives examples of each...nothing new here folks!

My one critique would be the chapter on the 100+ patterns we ABSOLUTELY MUST know to be a Grandpatzer and must be able to set up on the board at any moments notice is basically given in outline form! It would have been more beneficial to make this at least a third of the entire book! I mean we MUST KNOW it with a sense of urgency and it was taken very lightly. How about stating the typical position and an explanation of the positional features kinda like a puzzle book. Now that would have been helpful. If it was up to me... I would have made like Lev Alburt and made a book of 300 critical positions and turned it into a book, with each position teaching a valuable lesson that a Patzer may overlook.

I feel the book doesn't really disclose anything revoutionary, but I can reccommend it to any class players. Experts may find this book too elementary. The author does have some ideas at how to improve, but its one of those books that you flip to the contents page and only read 10 pages of what you need to know.

One of my favorites. If you have a lot of games under your belt but don't seriously compete in tournaments, this will probably be the most useful book on your shelf (according to Fritz, I'm playing somewhere between 1800 and 1900 these days). I have used some of the concepts in the book to great effect. If you do seriously compete, it probably still deserves a place on your shelf until you get close to master level. Once you get there, you ought to know what books should be on your shelf and what you need to study. Even then, this would probably be a fun read.

Dated, but still very useful!

Very engaging book! It is like a cross between "chess master at any age" - Wetzell, "Chess training Pocket book" - Albert "How to be a class A player" - Dunne all rolled into one.
Colby states the books goal as to provide Patzer (rated 1000-1500) the training program, tools, and specific knowledge to attain the roughly 2000 rating in chess. (i.e. Grandpatzer)
He covers a great deal of material - how to study, what to study, patterns to know, openings, middlegames, endgames, how to play old guys, young guys, nerves, clock pressre, etc.

The only real part of the book that is pretty outdated is where he explains how to beat computers. That is pretty much a thing of the past. Only Grandmasters of the highest caliber can really be said to have a chance against the engines of today.

Regardless of this last point, this is a well written book.
