(Though reviews are inherently subjective, I prefer to provide some organization to my opinions through the use of a personal rubric. The following notes may contain spoilers.)
Plot and Setting: 4 -- Plot is engaging. Has unique elements and no major holes, but a few shaky bits and/or a slight lack of focus. Setting is clear and believable. Timeline may be a bit hard to follow. This is a reunion love story -- plus some small-business-revamping drama; the painful complexities of dealing with secrets, trust, and sexual assault; raising moody preteens; and a bonus crazy-evil aunt thrown in. There's a lot going on, but the different elements feed into each other, and it works well. There were a few things that seemed too convenient (like Lisa going over the edge at just the right moment) or that weren't fully explained (like the second time Javier went to Ohio, ring in pocket), but overall it's a well-structured plot. Timeline was just a tad confusing here and there; it wasn't always immediately clear whether a new scene was the same day or a week later.
Characters: 4.8 -- Relatable, realistic, interesting, dynamic characters. Some minor characters have depth, as do the relationships between characters. Both Molly and Javier have strong personalities, and they each undergo some serious growth in the course of just a few emotionally-fraught weeks. They’re a good couple, both as teenagers and now as adults. They each have strong family relationships, as well, with lots of love and support, and also plenty of challenges and drama.
Mechanics and Writing: 4.2 -- A handful of typos, punctuation issues, or word errors. (<12/100 pgs) None of the errors seriously hinder understanding. Good use of POV. Generally skillful writing. Errors include: compound word confusion, mild punctuation or formatting issues (including awkward page breaks after the large capital letter at the start of 3 chapters). POV alternates between Javier and Molly.
Redeeming Value: 4.8 -- Well-developed, central, uplifting themes. Drugs, alcohol, violence, etc, are not glorified at all. No explicit sex scenes. Implied moral guidelines for behavior. The story is clean, though it does deal with rape and attempted rape (not graphically, but the reality is clear), as well as some psychological abuse. Molly learns that her aunt's cruel reaction to her trauma was not true: her rape was not her fault, and other people will in fact support and believe her when she finally shares her secret. The ladies of the prayer group surround her with unconditional love and godly support. Javier learns to be open to change, and acknowledges that he tends to be more judgmental than is healthy. Lessons in forgiveness, humility, honesty, and love.
Personal Enjoyment: 5 -- I loved it. It made me feel in all the best ways, and leaves me content and satisfied. One I'll definitely read again.
Well written and looking forward to all the stories of Arcadia Valley
