It's the perfect read for the Winter.
Can't recommend it enough.
Marianne is looking forward to her lover, movie star Ryan O’Gorman and his son, Joey’s return to Innishmahon for Christmas. However, nature conspires to throw a spanner in the works in the shape of a vicious storm which shuts down all transport to and from the island. The new harbour wall and the structure for the bridge, replacing the one that was washed away in last year’s storm, are under threat from the huge crane. Still, a mere storm wasn’t going to stop Ryan keeping his promise to be home for Christmas with Joey, whatever risks he had to take.
The islanders pull together in the wake of the storm, making sure everyone has the best Christmas they possibly can. And between them an idea is born to raise the necessary funds for the now critical repairs, which brings previous characters back to the island. Inevitably, nothing is straightforward and fears, losses and concerns have to be faced. The story threads are all brought together in a terrific conclusion.
As with the other two books, Secrets of the Heart is wonderfully crafted, the engaging mix of characters vividly drawn and credible, and to top it off there’s the evocative and beautiful island of Innishmahon. Alongside the romance there’s drama, secrets uncovered, suspense, surprises and emotional impact. Adrienne Vaughan’s writing is captivating and colourful, a joy to read.
It is a series with a bunch of characters who I really felt that I got to know and love – they are colourful, intriguing and complex – but always fun to read about. Over the series I really connected with its main character, Marianne, as I lived through her trials, tribulations and loves. She is a “can do” woman, loyal to a fault, generous and hardworking and with a heart as large as anything.
This book, as well as the others, is jampacked full of romance, intrigue, betrayals and drama and there are one or two surprises in store for the reader with regard to one of the characters, certainly. It will make you smile and laugh at times, as well as putting you in a mellow mood every now and again. I also loved the setting – this remote and rugged Irish island. What a shame it is only fictional!
I have always had a soft spot for stories set in Ireland, ever since I first picked up a Maeve Binchy many, many years ago and Adrienne Vaughan’s storytelling has that same sort of charm and magic that I always found i
Marianne Coltrane, once an adopted child, is now a grown woman, re-acquainted with her parents, who have just re-kindled their love. Soon after the honeymooners return, the island is attacked by a vicious storm which sets back the building of a bridge to the mainland. With no financial help from the government available, the islanders take it upon themselves to raise much needed funds.
There are plenty of willing helpers as famous people fly in from all over the world to buy a little piece of Ireland and help the cause, but lots of people have secrets on the island and there's more than one that weaves it's way to the surface with a little help from the Irish magic of Innishmahon. A magic which pulls people to the island much to the disgust of local resident Sean Grogan. I've really enjoyed all three books in this series and hope there's more to come.
