Phillips: Chapter 1, "Confessions of an Elk HuntingGuide," gives the reader an opportunity to meet a for-real elk-hunting guideand TV host, Chad Schearer. I've always wondered what the guide thinks of thepeople he guides. What are his concerns, how does he size-up the hunter, andhow does he pick the bull he's going to try to get his hunter to take? An elkguide has a bigger responsibility than just getting you your elk. He's got tomake sure that you're safe, you're comfortable, you're having a good time, and youdon't have more physical or mental stress on you than you can handle. I'vewondered too, "What does the guide think about me and my abilities?" So, Iwanted to look at elk hunting from the guide's perspective and let you see whatthey're thinking.
Question: John, how were you able to get thesestrategies you've included from these professional hunters?
Phillips: The men that I've mentioned in this bookare friends and acquaintances I've known for years. They know that I'm a trueseeker of knowledge, not only for myself but for my readers. I've learned thatthe information I can get from veteran hunters not only will help me become abetter hunter, but also enable the readers of my work to have more-enjoyableand more-successful hunts and learn to love the sport of elk hunting as I do.They've all been very willing and eager to help me learn more about elk.
