If you pull just one thing of importance from this book, it's that he didn't lose his weight by dieting! Ben made a lifestyle change and a commitment to keeping it. Nothing extremely severe, like I only eat lentils on Tuesday, grapefruit on Friday, and do a lemon water cleanse on the weekends. He did not lose 120 pounds in 12 months by exercising 7 days a week for hours on end. Making adaptations in his way of thinking and challenging the bad habits that were threatening his health, put him on the right track. As a healthcare professional, I was looking for places where advice might be given that would be dangerous or might cause adverse side effects, since Ben stated he's not in healthcare. But, the advice presented is sound. In fact, it lines up with advice that I give out very closely. But here's the deal. It is advice. Advice is something that you test against your own experiences or lack thereof and decide if you can/will implement it.
This book was definitely written with college students in mind, but much of the advice is appropriate for just about everybody. I think Ben clearly defined how changes could be made on a limited college income. Implementing many of the changes will actually save money as well as incur fabulous health benefits. For example, one point with huge impact...stop drinking soda. There are so many benefits from this one little piece of advice. One 12 oz. bottle of Coke delivers 150 empty, devoid of nutrition calories that will spike your blood sugar levels and be turned into fat. Many people drink at least one a day. It takes a burn/decrease of about 3500 calories to lose a pound of fat. 150 cal x 30= 4500 cal/month. That's more than a pound of fat lost in a month, just by trading in that Coke for a glass of water. Assuming a Coke costs about a dollar and you drink one a day, in an average month, just dropping that soda/day could save you $30/month. Other points he makes in lifestyle choices can also reflect positively in your wallet.
For the ebook price of $1.99 I would recommend this book as an absolute bargain! I have encouraged both my college age daughters to read it for the advice that's presented directly at them and the experiences they are currently going through, or will soon. This book is clever and engaging without being preachy, a pleasure to read. The advice is actually quite simple, but many people need it to be pointed out before they get their "Aha!" moment.
