From the Editor

The Secrets of Lost Stones is a magical book, and not just because it has sprinklings of magical realism throughout. Rather, this story instills hope and the belief that it’s possible to overcome what can feel like the most impossible of situations. Few books have left me so moved.

Jess Abbot lost her son, Chance, in a hit-and-run accident eight years ago. She’s floundered ever since, unable to shake her grief. When Jess leaves her home to become the caregiver of Lucy, “the Witch of Pine Lake,” she hopes to put the past behind her. Instead, she’s forced to face it in ways she never could have imagined.

Author Melissa Payne’s debut doesn’t shy away from the heartbreak of Jess’s situation, nor does it dwell in it. Instead, as Jess becomes part of Lucy’s world and the mysteries that it holds, she finds it is possible to move forward—and that starts with forgiveness.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Stories of loss are often moving, but rarely are they as fulfilling and redemptive as this stirring debut…Payne spins a fast-paced tale full of tenderness and sparked with magic, illustrating how the future can transcend the past, and proving that forgiveness is the greatest virtue.” —Sonja Yoerg, Washington Post bestselling author of True Places

“A compelling story of hidden secrets and the forgiveness that finds us when we least expect it.” —Kerry Anne King, bestselling author of Whisper Me This

“If Alice Hoffman had written The Shack, it would’ve turned out like The Secret of Lost Stones…an otherworldly, beautiful tale in which people who are grieving and lonely get the chance to find their way home. But will they take it?” —Wendy Webb, #1 Amazon bestselling author of Daughters of the Lake

About the Author

For as long as she can remember, Melissa Payne has been telling stories in one form or another—from high school newspaper articles to a graduate thesis to blogging about marriage and motherhood. But she first learned the real importance of storytelling when she worked for a residential and day treatment center for abused and neglected children. There she wrote speeches and letters to raise funds for the children. The truth in those stories was piercing and painful and written to invoke in the reader a call to action: to give, to help, to make a difference. Melissa’s love of writing and sharing stories in all forms has endured. She lives in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains with her husband and three children, a friendly mutt, a very loud cat, and the occasional bear. The Secrets of Lost Stones is her first novel.
