I've come to love this series! ~ Fantasy is more fun
I highly recommend this series for fun, action, and adventure. The mindreading ability and the mob boss angle puts a little bit of a spin onthe normal mystery story. It's a great series that I plan to continue to enjoy. ~ Gin's Book Notes

This 4th book in A Shelby Nichols is a little different than the other books in the series. It takes place in Florida. Without all the regular characters playing much of a roll except for Shelby and Ramos. We learn a lot more about Ramos's history and family.
It still has danger, drama, humor, violence, good guys and bad guys with some of the bad guys that I really like. It is also a clean read with a touch of paranormal.
I can pretty much guarantee that if you pick up one book, you will want to read them all. I did start with the first book and have read them in order, but I have gone back and re-read them as well, and they were just as enjoyable - if not more - the second time around.
Secrets that Kill is #4, and yes, she reads minds, and yes it comes in handy in this book too, but this one is much more. There has been tension/chemistry with Ramos since book 1, so no spoiler that it continues here. I did truly enjoy the predicament Shelby was in this time, and what she had to do to 'help'. What I enjoy also from this author is that she finishes the story. Yes they 'continue' but they are not "to be continued" or cliffhangers where you are not satisfied when done. As I said, I had stopped with book 2, cause it did "conclude". As did this one.

I respect this author's writing style because she respects being faithful in a relationship. No question there's the chemistry between Ramos & Shelby, and how easy it would be to write a character that cheats - but she hasn't thus far. I'm not a prude or conservative - but I do respect the person I'm with enough not to cheat. I've read plenty of erotica in my day as well, and this author has a way of writing hot chemistry, without swearing, using explicit or graphic terms for body parts, (which don't offend me), and it's still hot! When I read Ramos/Shelby, I have a little naughty smile, which is just fine and makes for great writing, IMHO, for an author to convey that emotion to a reader, without writing it..
Loved this so much, going to buy book #5 now!!
Well, I've looked back, just far enough to give the author a piece of my mind: She was costing me sleep! I was WAY, WAY overdrawn on my reading budget! Because I travel for a living, I often take long airplane flights, and I am constantly on the search for books to fill my Kindle for those long mind-numbing flights when you cannot sleep and video games or crappy movies just won't cut it.
I remember that I was in Rio when I finished the first book, struggling on less than 4 hours of sleep for a few nights. It was that good! Colleen writes with a sort of modified stream of consciousness style that is incredibly gripping and engaging and edge-of-your-seat and you-can't-put-it-down-till-you-see-what-happens... You get the idea.
From then till now Shelby, Chris, Uncle Joey "The Knife" Manetto and Ramos have all grown as characters. The style and writing have remained so consistent that it is very nearly like reading the next chapter, not the next book when a new Shelby Nichols adventure comes out. I really hope that she keeps this one going for a long time. I love them! Kudos to Colleen too, because she actually got this one out ahead of when she expected to.
In Secrets That Kill, the chemistry between Ramos and Shelby has really heated up. Can Shelby restrain herself? Between all the near-death experiences, the poker tournament, and finally finding out about Ramos's past, will she stay faithful to Chris and the kids? She's obviously a very attractive and vivacious woman, and there she is, all alone next to hunky Ramos in the sports car, in the Ritz, at the house...
Shelby and Ramos in many ways reverse roles in this episode of the Shelby Nichols Adventures, but do so in a very consistent, very believable way. If anything, Colleen Helme's character development and writing style have improved as she keeps writing. That's one of the things that I love the most about these books, you never see the author moving bits around on the stage. Ever. It is just about Shelby and what's happening in her world. That is extremely hard to accomplish, but Helme does this with aplomb, to the point where Shelby and her world take on a seamless experience that never leaves you saying "no way, she'd never do that."
Yes, it is another page turner. Another gripper. A steamy pheromone-laced edge of your seat drama. A five star execution of a modern novel. As always, Helme is near flawless in her execution, with almost no grammatical, syntax, spelling, or typographical errors. Nothing there to distract or annoy you.
I would recommend this book to anyone, and I do. Male, female, young, old, you will get a great sense of enjoyment from this book and be craving more, long after the price is forgotten.
If you are new to the Shelby Nichols Adventures, do yourself a favor: Start with the first one and work your way through the series in order. While the books most definitely stand on their own, you'll be glad you did!
As for me, I got through a 9 hour flight without realizing it, reading through drinks, meal, everyone sleeping, and in fact all the way to "It's time to turn off all your electronic devices and be sure that your tray tables are stowed in their..." you get the idea. Any book that can do that makes me a Fan For Life.
Okay, Colleen, when do we expect the next one?
