Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In his ninth novel, K'Wan (Gangsta; Road Dawgz) continues his popular Hood Rat series, with yet more of what his readers expect: action, murder, betrayal, sex, more action, familiar faces and a few surprises. Readers are first introduced to Tionna, a single mom of two, desperate to recover her footing after her man gets arrested for his involvement in drug and gun dealing. Moving back to her old neighborhood in shame, Tionna devises a plan with her girlfriends—Gucci, Boots and Tracy—to con local record label mogul Don B. Meanwhile, Gucci meets and falls for Animal, a notorious criminal who's on the fence about going legitimate as a rapper. As their pursuits intertwine, Tionna and friends find much to learn about unintended consequences. Quick and entertaining, K'wan's latest captures a small slice of modern urban life with a great degree of credibility and finds in Animal his most conflicted, memorable and likable character yet. Unfortunately, the plot hinges on some implausible (and cheesy) developments, which may try readers' patience. (Oct.)

Well the book started off slow and then all these characters from his past novels started popping up. Took me awhile to remember most of them. Shai Clark i definitely know from Hoodlum my favorite K'Wan book. I personally feel there were too many characters. I liked it but was expecting so much more. Now i have to wait what another year before K'wan comes out with another joint. I hope his next work is a page turner.

Section 8, the latest and greatest by K'wan, boasts similar elements found in his previous "hood" tales. He effortlessly addresses many of the issues faced by many living in the inner cities today: drug abuse, promiscuity and violence.

Tionna is presently stuck between a rock and a hard place. The man of her dreams is currently doing time. Duhan expects Tionna to hold him down, while he attempts to beat his case, all the while knowing that Tionna is penniless and barely able to care for their two children.

She's prepared to "ride" for her man until she meets Don B., CEO of Big Dawg Entertainment. Assuming he's the answer to her prayers, Tionna swiftly discovers he's her worst nightmare.

Gucci, Tionna's best friend, knows she's a dime piece and dares anyone, male or female, to think otherwise. This likable character has been down for Tionna through thick and thin. When Gucci finally meets someone whom she finds fascinating, she fears she may lose him before they have the chance to become acquainted.

Multifaceted, Tayshawn a/k/a Animal can't seem to leave the pandemonium of the streets behind. This gifted storyteller is granted an opportunity to become the newest and hottest rapper on the scene. Will his loyalty to Tech, his partner in crime, hinder Animal from exiting the streets indefinitely?

Along with a spectacular plot and plausible characters, K'wan unveils his comedic side with the introduction of Ronnie, Gucci's mother. She's a no-nonsense, blunt smoking woman who's been around the block ... several times. She dishes out advice, much to the dismay of Gucci and her friends, yet she does so in a humorous way.

I genuinely enjoyed reading this novel. Section 8 merits a perfect rating of five stars. I believe it's his finest work thus far.

Most of kwans books start of kinda slow do to the introductions of all the characters but this one got to the point faster but I have to say it leaves a big cliff hanger at the end I've begun to fall in love with a lot of the characters and hate certain parts but life isn't always what u want and neither are kwans stories...this book has New on the edge of my seat to get to the next book...it was a great read thumbs up kwan

The title of this book may have u thinking that this story is probably about golddiggers living in the hood, but it's far from that. U have characters like Gucci and Animal trying to better themselves and u also have characters like Tionna who learns the hard way that u can't go to war with someone if u don't have any money. This book is K'wan at his finest.

Tionna and her kids was living the high life with Duhan, until the cops got him for transporting drugs. Now, with her boo in jail, she must downsize, in order to survive. Moving into a Section 8 complex, she has her girls by her side, along with some others not asked for. One of those being Don B., who runs Big Dawz records, who turns out to be Tionna worst nightmare. Along the way is the most famous of K'wan's characters, being Animal. Already smitten with Gucci, she gonna have to put in a little work to totally get his attention, even though she already has. A quick ghetto read, will follow up with the next chapter in their lives.

I had been a minute since I read one of K'wan's books, so I was excited about reading this book that I heard so much about. We This tale from Harlem opens up introducing us to Tionna & Duhan who moved from Harlem living the highlife on the dollar of a hustler and it all comes crashing down. Tionna has to move back to the projects, that she turned your nose up to once she left, while Duhan becomes a resident of the system. Tionna is trying to save face and hold it down for her man & kids, but the plan she devises to accomplish this doesn't quite work out the way it was planned.

The streets are hot right now and we have Tech out there eating up everything in site, standing right by Tech's side is his girls Silk and China White. We learn their story and how down they are for Tech and the game. Things get a little complicated when Tech doesn't want to follow the rules of the street game and the streets come a calling to teach him a lesson.

We also meet Gucci, Tionna's best friend who hooks up with the notorious boy that the streets call Animal. Animal's on the rise to becoming the next big thing in the rap game under the management of The Don at Big Dawg Entertainment. Now is the time Animal has to cut his ties to the streets, but you know what they say, " you can take the man off the streets but you can't take the streets out of the man." This is all to true as these street hustlers try to go legit and leave the game behind. This is story of hard lessons learned, loyalty, the struggle of the streets and the sweet taste of revenge, but not necessarily in that order.

There are a few more memorable characters that we meet in this tale that also make this story do what it do, but you'll have to read it to meet them! When I finished the last page, I couldn't order Welfare Wifey's fast enough . I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a good hood book, it wasn't a let down and it definitely was a page turner. A great book club book.
