The SIRUI T-1204X Tripod is the perfect compact traveler’s companion. With its easy folding design, it can be reversely folded into a more compact size (a length of 15.7 in) that will fit with one of the recommended SIRUI ball heads in the traveling case. Only weighing about 0.8 kg (1.76 lbs), the model can support up to 22 lbs of photographic equipment and stay very sturdy at the same time. This 4-section 8X carbon fiber tripod also comes with a short center column that you may use interchangeably with the main center column for low-height shooting. Two adjustment settings are available that click in place automatically to lock the angle.
The T-1204X is ideal for use with 35mm photographic cameras, DSLRs (even a Canon 5D Mark II with lens), and digital or conventional type video camcorders. The recommended ball heads are SIRUI G-10, K-10X, but the G-20 and K-20X also work.
Instead of using the traditional casting processes that is typical of construction in the tripod industry, SIRUI is the pioneer to adopt the technology of forging, which can produce a piece that is stronger than an equivalent cast or machined part as the organizational structure of the metal is more welded and compacted together. In addition, forging enhances the integrity of metal grains so that they remain consistent and continuous, which allows for a longer lifetime as well as better performance that is unrivalled by that which is created by casting.
Anodic Surface Treatment
Anodizing surface treatment, produced by an electrolytic oxidation process to increase the thickness of the natural oxide layer on the surface of metal parts, is applied to increase corrosion and wear resistance, surface hardness, and enhance color durability.
Top customer reviews
I'm happy with this tripod.
Sirui is a Chinese brand, which might make some people nervous. However, this is one company that specialises in high-end photographic gear rather than cheap knockoffs. Its products easily match the quality of all but the very best western brands (Gitzo, Really Right Stuff) at a fraction of the cost.
My aim was to buy a reasonably-priced fully-featured, full-sized compact travel tripod/ballhead combo that would offer solid support for my Micro Four Thirds system while weighing less than 1 kg (2.2 lb) so that it could be used for travel.
The Sirui, paired with a Photo Clam PC-33 ballhead, achieved all of those aims apart from the weight - I went over by 100 g (3.5 oz). It did not seem possible to get under 1kg without compromising stability or important features such as an adjustable centre pole on the tripod or friction control on the ballhead.
The T-1204x has proven to be a great tripod. The build quality approaches Gitzo standard at a fraction of the price. The legs feature eight layers of carbon fibre, rubberised twist-locks and non-rotating shafts (this feature means you can twist the leg-locks without the leg shafts twisting with them). The stability of the legs at least matches the stability of my other full-sized tripod, an aluminium Velbon which weighs 250g more.
My E-P3 with an M. Zuiko 40-150 telephoto zoom is rock-solid on these legs with the centre pole down. With the centre pole fully extended, the camera can move a little if you are leaning against the camera or otherwise applying some deliberate force. It is solid enough to shoot wildlife while maintaining a grip on the camera.
Although my mirrorless Micro Four Thirds kit is very lightweight, I think these legs would easily support an APS-C DSLR with a hefty lens or a full-frame DSLR with a 70-200 f2.8 lens (assuming you have a good ballhead).
One of the most important features of a travel tripod is its ability to have its legs folded backwards 180 degrees to make a compact travel unit. The T-1204x achieves this nicely with aluminium locks at the top of each leg that have four postions (tall, medium, low and folded back). I do wish that the T-1204x was slightly shorter when folded. The T-1205x sister-model (which has five leg sections instead of four) does fold up 5cm shorter at the expense of offering less rigid support, as the fifth leg section is relatively spindly.
The T-1204x comes with a six-year warranty, a set of Allen keys, two centre poles of different lengths and a nice padded bag with a detachable strap that be used to carry the tripod without using the bag (although I have found this to be a bit awkward).
I have found the Photo Clam PC-33 to be an excellent match for these legs. It is similar to a Markins ballhead but is smaller, lighter, cheaper and equal in build quality. It is superior to a Markins in one respect - the adjustment knobs have been designed specifically to fit between the legs of a traveller tripod in its fully-folded position (the Markins knobs stop one leg from folding in properly).
Negatives? The price of around $250 or so for the legs and $175 for my PC-33 ballhead is certainly not chickenfeed. If you do not want to spend this much cash then you might be better to look into aluminium tripods, which can perform just as well but are heavier to lug around. If you want carbon fibre, however, I don't think you'll do better than the Sirui at this price point.
The T1204X is very light and easy to carry around. It is nevertheless extremely solid and sturdy. It extends to a max height of 55" with the center column fully extended and measures 16" when folded up (the otherwise identical T1205X folds to 13.5" but has 5 leg sections). Setup is quick and straight-forward.
I particularly like the fact that the tripod comes separate from the head. The Canon SX50 zooms up to 1200mm and a smoothly operating ball head is critical for me when adjusting the camera. A lot of light-weight tripods come as a set and often the head is really useless.
The SX50 is not a very heavy camera, but I have no doubts that this tripod will support heavy SLR cameras without problems. It would be really hard to find any comparable tripod in this weight range. Gitzo makes light tripods of excellent quality, but they are still a bit heavier than the Sirui and cost three times as much.
In summary this tripod provides an excellent trade-off between weight and sturdiness at a very reasonable price.
