It's easier to clean than I thought it would be - it really does just rinse out with a quick swish. I got this model because I wanted the manual control knobs rather than the digital and I have no problems with them at all. It is quiet, only the timer and fan make noise and they are both really quiet.
I was most surprised at how quickly and perfectly that golden brown crust formed on the chicken and the pork. I also cooked some steak fries and they browned quickly and cooked quickly as well.
I plan to get one of these for each of my kids to use as well.
Before I bought this oven, I had 3 others, a Magic Chef (adequate - fan finally gave out) a NuWave (worked OK but plastic housing cracked, duct taped together for about a year), and a brand I forget, which barely warmed the meat.
I grill. Period. So I need enough heat to sear meat. Each of the predecessors died an untimely death for its own reason, except the last, which was still capable of producing soggy meat when I chucked it into the dumpster.
I was thrilled when my Secura oven SEARED my steaks. I was happy as a clam until one day, while staring reverently at the gradual metamorphosis of a formerly raw chunk of meat, I noticed a sudden spark, a little meteor which shot out of the heating element of my oven, followed by sudden darkness, though the fan was still humming away. As I suspected, the oven was toast.
I had had the oven for 9 months, slightly over the 90 day warranty period. Nonetheless, I sent an email to Secura support full of rationalizations, begging, and thinly veiled though wholly insubstantial threats. To my surprise, not only did they acknowledge my complaint, but they said they thought maybe 9 months was a little short of their expectations as well. They sent me a replacement oven, new and complete.
The new oven was obviously redesigned, and from the manual, I think the early demise of my unit may have been addressed in changes to the electronics. Nonetheless, while I always set the original oven to 500 F, I leave the new one set at 437, the next notch down on the dial. It still broils my steaks and chicken as crispy as I like. I have been using the new oven for about a year, and once again, I am happy as a clam. (Though I am starting to worry about the long term health effects of constantly staring at Halogen elements.)
A few notes on savings in time and energy from the Secura oven:
I bought a new range/oven with a flat ceramic top. The Secura oven sits on top of it. I've used the range twice, and the oven not at all. The last full oven I had I only used for large pizzas. I can cook personal size pizzas and everything else in the Secura.
Cooking a 1.5" steak (medium rare) in the Secura takes about 5 minutes per side (no preheating), and chicken thighs or breasts take about the same. One big advantage is that the Secura has a very powerful convection fan, so the heat is very evenly distributed.
Cleanup is easy. The large glass bowl can be put in the sink, and the lid/heating unit doesn't catch much cooking splatter, and can be wiped with a damp dishcloth. Try cooking steak in a regular oven!
I rarely use the regular oven anymore and NEVER fry bacon in the skillet. Cleanup is very easy. I haven't put it in the dishwasher. It says it's dishwasher safe but it's pretty big and between the self cleaning function and the ease of rinsing it in the sink, there's been no need to put it in the dishwasher. I'm thinking of giving mine to my mother and upgrading to the digital Secura (with fan speed control) for myself. If you buy this, do invest in one of the Halogen Turbo oven cookbooks as the recipe booklet that comes with this is skimpy.
I normally do not post reviews but my experience with customer service was so poor that others who want to buy this or own this product needs to be aware of.
Here is my personal honest experience with this oven....
Bought my oven from Amazon.
The oven worked great for about a little over a year and I loved it. Used it a few times a month.
Then the lamp went out.
I could not find a replacement lamp anywhere. I saw something on Ebay for about 25 bucks but it's not original and I am not sure if it will work.
I searched around the internet and found their website and a phone number.
After trying to call for many days I finally got to speak to someone.
I asked the rep about how I could buy a new lamp.
She asked me to email in the request thus I contacted them via email asking how I can buy a replacement lamp.
Emailed 3 times over a few days and got no response.
I tried calling again and again but no one answered the phone.
Now I am pretty sure they just passed me to an email instead of helping while I was on the phone with them.
I totally understand things break and am fine with repairing it and paying for the repair.
However, there is absolutely no excuse to not help or even reply back to a customer who needs to buy simple replacement parts that they may not be able to get elsewhere.
What a Scam.
