Now you can deter robbery, theft, and vandalism without the high cost of a real security camera. When placed in your home or business, even the most sophisticated criminals will think the premise is guarded by a high-tech surveillance system and go in search of an easier target. In fact, this is an actual surveillance camera that has been modified into a "dummy" or fake security camera. This unit does contain a flashing light. The camera features authentic video cable and a fully adjustable mounting bracket that will let you install the camera quickly and easily using the included stainless steel screws. Dimensions of the camera are 5 one half inches x 3 inches x 2 and one half inches (without rain shield). With the rain shield the dimensions increase to 7 x 3 x 3 inches. The camera requires 2 AA batteries that are not included.

To get the best bang for the buck out of these cameras, pick up a couple of signs (one for the back and front of the property, or other access points) stating that you have continuous video surveillance operating. If you don't have an in-home security system, pick up a couple of security signs as well that give the impression that you do. Of course, never tell anyone--certainly not neighbors, coworkers, or casual acquaintances--that the cameras are fake or that you don't have a security system indoors. If you do, the joke could eventually be on you. Also, don't overdo it with signs and/or stickers. Don't overcompensate for the fake security items by posting too many "thief beware"-type messages. This might tip off one of the smarter burglars, and certainly a professional criminal would probably figure out the lark.
I have mixed feelings about using the flashing red light on these cameras. On the one hand, these fake cameras are only a deterrent if people know that they are in place. The light does bring attention to them, and I would guess that the casual, opportunistic thief or the teenage hoodlum would be intimidated by a camera with a flashing light. However, for anyone else who thought about it for a minute, they would ask, "Wouldn't a flashing red light right in the lens of the camera obscure the video recording?" or "Doesn't a flashing red light on a camera usually mean the battery's dead (or dying) or that the camera is in pause mode?" or "How many security cameras have you come across at stores or other establishments with flashing red lights?" If anyone stakes out your home long enough (or simply does a Google search for "fake security cameras"), they are liable to figure out what's going on. And an experienced criminal with any knowledge of security equipment will figure it out much sooner. Thus, I think that use of the red light should be limited and situational, and probably best avoided all together if you have some good signage and stickers that will draw attention to the camera's presence.
Anyhow, again, these fake cameras should complement other security tactics (real or deceptive) and not be a sole strategy by themselves. It's simply a single layer of protection that will probably work for a good number of people in many circumstances, but I do highly recommend at least a few signs, posters, and/or stickers for maximum effectiveness. Also, camera placement is important--these should be placed overhead for the full intimidation effect and far enough away to guard against close visual scrutiny or tampering by would-be criminals (or curious neighbors and friendly visitors). Aim the cameras at points of entry like doors or vulnerable windows, not just toward the street or driveway.
I am happy with this purchase and recommend this product, but only with use with other related items (signs/stickers, etc.) and a good dose of common sense.
The camera were very easy to install and look very authentic and the price was great! Very effective for what she is using it for. Thank you!
