Update DEC 2015: I have used this weekly since I owned it and its traveled with me all over the US and EU. Still going strong, reliable beautiful hair! Still highly recommend this iron.
When this iron arrived, it didn't have an outer box that I have seen them with before (bad sign #1) and when I took it out of the box, I noticed the plates had a pretty significant gap (bad sign #2) that would close with enough pressure. Since this was sold by Folica, I put aside concerns that this was either a knock off, refurbished or a factory 2nd and tried it out. This flat iron stresses how gentle it is and how it will prevent damage; however I found myself going over each section of hair 5 or more times and STILL not getting half the results I did with my old Paul Mitchell Iron. Because of the gap between the plates, the added pressure I had to apply caused pulling even though the plates were smooth. I tried using this with many different techniques and temps and worked my way up to 300 degrees. I refused to go any higher with my hair type. The old Paul Mitchell would give sleek, straight results with body at 240 degrees with one and sometimes 2 passes.
So, I'm wondering where was the outer box? Why was the construction bad? Why was the performance so bad? With this iron being SO bad, it just doesn't jive with most of the reviews. WAS this a return or factory 2nd?
Controlling the temperature setting on this iron is very difficult. It has a very small dial that's not well marked, so you can only guess at what temperature it is set on. The Corioliss had a digital thermostat, so I could set the exact temperature. Another thing I don't care for on this Sedu is that it does not open very wide, which makes it more difficult to get my hair between the plates. Not a big deal, but worth mentioning. Also, I wish it had an auto shut off function in case I forget to turn it off.
Bottom line - it is a no frills flat iron that does a good job, but you can get one just as good for a lot less money. The ad description says that it comes with a heat pad to sit it on, but it does NOT!
