Format: Paperback
I came across this book some 15 years ago when I was doing research on the social consequences of gambling. I found it quite useful as a resource in making the case against gambling. Writing from a Christian perspective, Rogers makes the biblical case against gambling. But he also looks at other arguments against gambling, showing how even from a secular perspective gambling is a bad bet. In addition, he discusses the social and economic consequences of gambling and shows that those who are hurt most are not the wealthy high rollers but the poor, the ones who can least afford to gamble, and that when the government gets involved in the gaming industry (e.g., through lotteries and the like) in order to create a revenue source, it effectively establishes a highly regressive form of taxation.

Throughout the book Rogers maintains a level-headed tone, one that is in no way sensationalistic. He is also fair in evaluating the arguments of proponents of legalized gambling, and his criticisms of them are well reasoned.
