We have the last of the 3 pairs of siblings as our main characters. We know that the H is a bit of a grumpy nerd with his own IT business. The h does the baking for the tea shop. She's decided that she's going to do everything in her power to get the H to notice her and then she'll seduce them. The problem is that the h is friend-zoned and nothing she does seems to work. This H was so gun-shy that it was annoying to read about it. Obviously, when they do succumb to their hormones, he immediately backtracks. The h then decides to write him off and begins dating with a vengeance. I was actually cheering her on at this point. Anyway there's a little more rinse and repeat before the H realises the error of his ways. I just didn't love how easy the h made it for him. When he changed his mind it only took a day or so for the h to come around. When the H was awful the two other times, loads of time passed. I'll always love this author but I just didn't love this story.
That was me with Patrick.
He's a great guy, don't get me wrong. Smart and funny and loyal. But he has no clue how to read someone. None. Oh, and he overthinks a lot. About everything. Which is really, really, really frustrating. Because there were so many times in this story that he didn't need to. He just needed to feel, to let his heart guide him, to trust that what he felt with Carol was right and meant to be.
His reluctance to do any of that almost cost him her. What a mess that would've been!
Carol is determined. Who doesn't love a single-minded woman? I gave her credit for sticking it out as long as possible, for hoping so hard for a future with Patrick, but... Damn. She was wrecked. Every let down, every thoughtless word and action, every killed moment she experienced completely wrecked her. I'm not talking a constant watering pot, though she was that. I'm talking you could see her hope for a future with Patrick just disappear little by little throughout the story.
It was so hard to read.
It was so hard to not cry with her.
It was so hard to hold onto hope when hers was crumbling to the ground.
I know I've read Ms. Adams stories before, but I can't remember any of them leaving me a mess like this one. I was hopeful, happy, elated, lost, crushed, broken, angry, bitter... God, I was everything Carol was. And that, all of that, made this an amazing story.
This story is straight-forward. You know who's going after who. It isn't a mystery. It's getting to that happy ending that kept me turning the pages because I wanted to know! I wanted to see Carol happy. I wanted Patrick to wake up. I wanted it all. I just had to go through a myriad of emotions and situations to get it.
Well written, Ms. Adams. You kept me on the edge of my seat and somewhere between wanting it all and calling it quits with this story. I'd read it again just to experience it all over again.
Carol has loved Patrick for a long time, but he is clueless. So clueless, he mucks it up more than once and nearly loses any opportunity.
The end was cute but left me wanting just a little bit more.
