This was a pretty good story. Both Jenna and Roman are likable characters and the story was good with a surprisingly low amount of angst through most of the story. This is the first story I've read by this author and I like it well enough that I'm likely to try more of her work in the future.
Jenna is a pastry chef and is from a family of chefs. Her family owns a restaurant and her brother has a job as a corporate chef. The problem is that Jenna's family is trying to keep her out of the restaurant business (even after she completed culinary school) when all she wants to do is take over her family's restaurant. It doesn't help when she finds that the family business is in trouble and may be sold if they can't turn things around.
Roman is a chef and runs a restaurant business with his mother. He's taken many failing restaurants and turned them around and is currently doing the same with a beach side place in Venice Beach. As a chef the hours are horrible and make relationships hard so Roman has a tenancy to sleep around (no relationships) and since he's rather high profile and sleeps with high profile women, his playboy status is well known and documented.
Jenna decides to go to California to see Roman and try to get his help with some ideas on how to save her family's failing restaurant. When she gets there it seems pretty obvious that he needs a pastry chef so she tries to get him to hire her on (at least temporarily) to help out with making a new desert menu. Roman might have been interested in hiring her if she wasn't his BFF's little sister. He's wanted her since she was 16 years old and having her close and working with him doesn't seem like a good idea. Soon he finds out about Jenna's family issues and her need for advice and decides to hire her for a short time and during that time he can try to help her with a plan of action for when she goes back home. Roman is also convinced that since he has a firm rule of not sleeping with co-workers that hiring her will make it easier to resist doing naughty things to Jenna.
The platonic pretense between Roman and Jenna disappears pretty quickly. Jenna knows anything long term is pointless to wish for but does offer up a "friends with benefits" deal while she's in town. Roman isn't sure if it's a good idea but does eventually agree but even then he holds off on the actual act, thinking that if he holds off he's respecting her and giving her a chance to change her mind. Jenna doesn't want that though and there's some back and forth while the chemistry between them sizzles but doesn't get very far...at least at first. While Jenna and Roman are dealing with their non-relationship and some major attraction, there's some other issues going on, like the makeover of the beachfront restaurant that Roman's working on as well as a big dinner in Vegas that's coming up and Roman is expected to provide the desert for. With everything going on, Jenna and Roman don't get much talking done, especially once their relationship goes all the way. Both soon are realizing they want more but there is some drama before things get settled between them. Thankfully, with a little bit of a wait, Jenna and Roman do get their HEA in the end.
I enjoyed this story very much. I liked Roman and thought he was a pretty good hero. I'm a bit sensitive to annoying heroines at times and I will note that Jenna came close a time or two but I never really got annoyed with her and overall I liked her. Jenna and Roman together worked really well for me and I was happy to see them work things out. I'd recommend this story. :D
The author does a fantastic job of getting the reader involved in the story and keeping us there till we are finished.
I loved Roman and Jenna. Both were strong personalities and seeing them fight the attraction was well worth the build up. Plus watching them turn The Beach House restaurant around and to see the light bulb come on for Jenna on how to save her families restaurant was a highlight.
The chemistry is strong from the start and with a proposal from Jenna that Roman can't refuse, it sky rockets into the stratosphere. Roman may be a playboy, but he is definitely is a panty melter. " I want you. Everything about you makes me crazy, your curls, your curves, your delicious deserts, even your ability to not take no for an answer works for me on every level. You are impossible to resist". Oh yum.
Jenna had me laughing more than once and her determination is admirable. She knew what she wanted, how to go about it and boy does she get it in the end. " Did she have hot for Roman emblazoned on her forehead ?"
This is the second book in the Hot Night Series but can be read as as stand alone. Have snacks ready as the deserts described in this book are drool inducing, not to mention the burgers and the desert for a big event. Wow, I want.
Grab a comfy seat and dive in. If I loved the whole book, I really, really loved the ending. I had a big smile from ear to ear and may have read it twice because I enjoyed it so much.
This book was supplied by the publisher for an honest review.
