Editorial Reviews

Voting against the Mafia in what he thinks is a secret ballot costs Sicilian laborer Mimi (Academy Award (c) Nominee Giancarlo Giannini, Seven Beauties, Man on Fire, Quantum of Solace ) his livelihood in Lina Wertmuller's (Swept Away) dark comedy. He leaves his wife, flees to Turin and romances a Communist organizer (Mariangela Melato, Swept Away, Flash Gordon) -- but he just can't shake the Mafia. When they lure Mimi back to Sicily with a better job, he must keep his lover -- and love child -- under wraps. That's when his wife announces she's pregnant.

This broad, clever satire on male hypocrisy and social convention is priceless, if you love the mournful comic countenance of actor Giannini, as I do. His Mimi is an artful creation, an ignorant, impetuous, bumbling fool you can't help but love. The machinations he undergoes to get back at his spouse will amaze and amuse. Don't miss the scene when the fat lady disrobes- it's deservedly the stuff of cinematic legend.

A man that wants everything, and ends up with nothing. Mimi, the laborer, is seduced into working for the Mafia - which he hates and fears - to pay for his extramarital affairs.
A well made film of high caliber. Thoroughly enjoyable and remarkably light hearted for an otherwise somber topic. A must for the serious movie buff.

The brilliant actor Giancarlo Giannini does his best to play Mimi, a bumbling, not too smart but lovable fool who does not hesitate to participate unwisely in activities like sex and politics, then lecture others on that which he has not mastered. The movie gets these ideas across through a series of events that knit together as a sometimes hilarious farce, punctuated with threats of bodily harm to Mimi as he is tortured by heartfelt desires to be a loyal communist tempered by his desires to stay alive and prosper made possible by his faking loyalty to the Mafia. The movie is funny enough, but falls blow the quality of Wertmuller's "Swept Away" and far below her "Seven Beauties."

A comical and satirical tryst! Delight in Wertmuller's trademark themes of politics and sex. This film adds the differences between Northern and Southern Italy and honor to the mix. The seduction is politically oriented, as you will see with the hilariously, ubiquitous presence of the Mafia. Sicilian concepts of a man and his honor is revealed in Mimi's relationship with his wife, his mistress, his wife's lover's wife, which all somehow become convoluted with politics. Wertmuller, Giannini, and Melato have not reached their heights, but all of the elements of their later masterworks are present in this film.

To me it was very original, funny and sad.
It showed the typical love Italian style, mixed with the unfortunate but ever so present, mafia influence, and the poor and misguided Italian southerner.

Lina Wertmuller is amazing. I don't love everything that she did (and still have to track down some of her films), but she is a force of nature, and someone who can mix comedy and serious subjects with the best of them. The performances in this film are hilarious, but also powerful and memorable. It kind of plays like a work from the silent era in ways, with its cascading frames of reference and the protagonist trying to undo the mess he's made, while it skewers the male world that has produced them. Laugh out loud funny in many sections, this is a great movie.

Wertmueller uses farce and exaggeration artistically to portray the subjects of patronage and sycophancy, profit and corruption, elevation of corporate power above the individual.
Today's audience might see this as just an old fashioned, regional and quaint comedy centered around the time worn subject of the Mafia, but in so doing would be avoiding looking closely at today's world.
This film is more horrific to see now than when I first saw it many many years ago when young and even more naive.
What is to dislike here? The story, dialogue, acting, direction, camera work, music? It all works so finely together, with unique style.
My favorite of her movies.

For: The Seduction of Mimi (1972)
Studio: Fox Lorber (A Winstar Company)
DVD Release Date: March 31, 1998

One Star for the DVD: To produce a cheep widescreen version - Fox Lorber Home Video has taken the movie's full frame image version and has cropped off the top and bottom part of the image. Fox Lorber simply removed part of the image just to please those of us who prefer the widescreen format. Many times during the movie the bright light will bleed over into the black cropped bars producing a glowing horizontal line within the black bars.

Five Stars for the Movie: A great movie! I cannot wait to buy a new DVD release of his movie that is Restored, Digitally Re-mastered and presented in its true original aspect ratio. Until then I will just have to settle for this piece of junk DVD transfer that I just paid $31.50 for.
