Editorial Reviews

Originally one of George Clinton's Brides of Funkenstein, Val Young then joined the Gap Band, & was featured on the funk classic "Oops Upside Your Head". She recorded five albums with them before being spotted by, Rick James. Impressed as much by her striking physical appearance as by her musical talents, James promoted her as the 'Black Marilyn Monroe'. James produced this 1985 debut solo album. It includes the Top 30 R&B hits singles "If You Should Ever Be Lonely" & Seduction". 2007 first time on CD reissue.

Val Young was no novice to the music industry when she released this album in 1985. She had already worked with and sang backing vocals for such R&B funk acts like Parliament Funkadelic,George Clinton, and The Gap Band among others before meeting Rick James. It was through James and the signing up with the Motown label Gordy that her one and only successful album "Seduction" would come to fruition(a second album was released in 1987, titled "Private Conversations"---while a decent release, it lacked that certain memorable impact, energy, and standout tracks unlike it's predecessor).

"Seduction" is now a highly sought after album and cd amongst Rick James' fans---or fans of that 80's R&B, funk music scene(available as an import only as of this writing) for several good reasons: James was at the height of his game and fame as well as being a successful producer/Young's vocals were seductive and powerful in the style of The Mary Jane Girls' lead singer Jo-Jo(another Rick James protégé band)/the production sound of the album was a hybrid or cross between the James' late 70's,early 80's punk-funk era, yet, modern with strong hints of rock, and a good portion of sophisticated drum and synth electronic R&B(it was the 80's).It was definitely a 'Slick-Rick' production. The two top tracks off of this release were 'Mind Games'(hard rock guitar intro) and the piece de resistance, the pulsating and electrifying title-track. There were a few slower jams thrown in the mix and some mid tempo numbers but nothing to make the listener skip forward.

Val Young's "Seduction" was a grossly underrated R&B album that should have received a LOT of attention but didn't. The vocals were strong, the production slick, the tracks memorable.Yet, somehow this one fell through the cracks. For any true die-hard Rick James or soul,R&B,funk fan(especially of this era) this is one album or cd absolutely worth obtaining if you come across a copy or are able to purchase the import!

It's an import, of course, because the folks in the US can't be bothered with cool R&B albums like this. I've had issues with ZYX Records' mastering (ie: their release of Sylvester's "Mutual Attraction" CD was taken off of a cassette!) I like the sound of my vinyl album better, but this is a start. They could have also stripped the fantastic 12" versions of "Seduction" and "If You Should Ever Be Lonely" on here. This would have made the import price worth it a bit more. Let's hope we see her 1987 release (Amherst Records) of "Private Conversations" out soon. That was the jam. Rick James always had the funky touch with the women! And yes, Val Young was ahead of her time. How many current R&B divas have sported that sultry blonde look?

FINALLY ON CD. This is really the black Marilyn Monroe. She is beautiful, talented and a stunner. Her both albums I own together with all her maxis. I will never psart with such great work. If you should ever be lonely, seduction and private conversations are real gems. There are more tracks from both albums the should have been extended/remixed. They ahould have included the extended maxi versions on the cd's, but you know OLD is GOLD. I would like to see Vinyl Masterpieces realeasing cd singles of the original maxis, in future. ALL COLLECTORS OF MUSIC, VAL YOUNG IS A MUST IN YOUR COLLECTION. Get your copy will you can, its gonna be a rare hard to find cd soon.

The two tracks "Seduction" which I thought was one of the best tracks of the eighty's. The only other track on this album that was worth listening to to me was "If You Should Ever Be Lonely". I think the rest were just fillers. In my search for the music of my young adult life and of people whom I consider to be one hit wonders and Val Young is one of those. "Seduction" is one of those rare thumpin gems of the post disco era. As I continue to search and build my collection of the music of my lifetime, I am glad to have finally found this one.
