Well, this is a quick read so I never like to give too much away. I'm not sure how long it took me to finish as I was enjoying it too much to pay attention, I'd say 2-3 hours probably. It takes place during a London winter, with the conclusion on Christmas Day. It was an engaging story with well developed and life-like characters who I completely fell in love with. Wrathell was utterly charming and a true hero in every sense of the word, and Honora was courageous and beautiful both inside and out. It was heartbreaking at times seeing how people reacted to her scar and I'll confess wanting to scream at and punch a few of them. Most heartrending of all is how Honora views herself though, as unlovable and unworthy. Then there's Wrathell who sees beyond the imperfection and whose protectiveness touched my heart. These two had an incredible connection and I thought their love was both sweet and passionate. Overall it was a breathtakingly romantic story, and one I'm so glad to have read!
Miss Honora Baynard, age 23, had been scarred on her face at age 13. Her mother passed away some time ago and her father, Frederick Baynard, is a well-known artist demanding great commissions for his work. Currently, they live at the Morin Hotel in London.
Lieutenant Lord Leoline Marrable, and the new Lord Wrathell, has just returned to London after 7 years with the Navy and 3 years with the East India Company. He is also an artist who has trained under Frederick Baynard. During his absence, Honora kept an album of his postings over the years for he was the one who had rescued her when she had been injured many years ago. Both Honora and Leoline were born on December 24th and he is 5 years older than she. Now that Leoline is back in London and has visited with Honora and her father, he has decided to ask Frederick to paint him.
While Honora does not like being seen in public with her facial scar, Leoline still finds her beautiful. She is a talented artist herself and does finishing work on her father’s paintings. As Leoline and Honora spend more time together, she is able to relax with him and an attraction builds. When Leoline asks to paint her, will she be able to allow herself to do so and be comfortable in her “own skin?” Could there be a future for them?
This is a novel of learning to let go and be yourself no matter how you look. Honors and Leoline are great characters and I enjoyed reading the story.
