A page turner for sure

I thoroughly enjoyed the book from the moment I started it. The authors writing style in this book is one I particularly enjoy and one that is often employed by authors like Dean R. Koontz.
And that is the chapters that alternate between the main characters.

This book is about an ordinary young family thrown in to very extraordinary circumstances. One chapter will be about the husband searching for his wife and child while being wanted for questioning in their disappearance. The next chapter about the wife as she fights to protect herself and her child. Then a chapter here and there about the various people that are helping them or double crossing them.

Because of this, the book moves along very quickly and is full of fast paced action. It's all very refreshing that even though there is plenty of murder and mayhem it is done without being too graphic.

No Twists and Turns....too many graphically disturbing scenes

I am a fan of psychological thrillers, but this one didn't appeal to me very much. I was expecting a story with twists and turns, but this one didn't really have any. It was filled with action and suspense, but no shocking revelations or surprises. Just people running and hiding and lots of evil, disgusting bad characters. If you are a woman, you may want to read on.....(SPOILER ALERT: There is a particularly disturbing scene of a woman being sexually molested in front of her family and is later stripped bound and almost raped before being rescued and some other severely upsetting scenes of an infant being terrorized-dangled upsidedown by it's pjs, being tossed in the air, knife held to it's throat, kidnapped to be sold). If you are a women or a mother, this may be too disturbing for you. I know it's only fiction, but it can cause anxiety due to the detailed graphic descriptions. I only add this because I wish I had been warned about this content. I wouldn't have read it.

This book has one of the most anxiety inducing first chapters I've ever read! Two men break into Harry and Alice's house in the middle of the night, threaten their 8 week old baby with a knife to her neck, prepared to kill to get the information they want...I don't think my pulse slowed down the whole time I was reading this book.

Harry and Alice think that's the end of it because they really don't have the information the two thugs want, but it's only the beginning. Things begin to spiral, they both make some questionable decisions, but nothing too unrealistic. Harry and Alice get separated at one point, and Alice's storyline is a little more intense, if only because she has baby Evie with her. I could relate to her mama bear instincts. It was a fairly accurate picture of a small infant: she mostly sleeps, eats and needs diaper changes, but she doesn't just fade into the background.

Not too much is revealed about the bad guys, and I really didn't care. Harry, Alice and Evie captured my attention from the get go and kept it all the way through.

I gave this book 4/5 stars. This book is suspenseful and so action packed! It's another one I can add to my list of staying up late to finish reading because I just had to know what was going to happen! Harry and Alice are woken one night to intruders in their home. They terrorize the couple as well as their baby, only to discover they have the wrong house. The criminals are in search of a package that was supposedly delivered to their house, but it wasn't...or was it? After being threatened with their lives if they tell a soul, including the police, Harry and Alice take matters into their own hands (separately) and try to figure out the mystery behind it all. With 'help' (I'm using that word very lightly) from 'strangers' (again, using it lightly) they start to uncover the horrific truth while trying to stay alive and safe.
The suspense is unreal and when the truth is finally revealed, I was completely in shock. There are so many twists and turns, I found myself questioning everyone Harry or Alice came in contact with wondering if they were good, bad, or just plain evil as some of the characters were. At times I did find the story a little confusing. There were so many characters it was hard to keep up. I found myself having to read pages over again just to make sure I understood what was going on.
While I know of many reviewers who gave this book a perfect 5 review, I couldn't bring myself to do it. There are two sexual scenes that were very difficult to read. One of them might be one of the most disturbing scenes I've ever read, and I've read some pretty messed up stuff. For those scenes, I had to knock my review down a star. However, keep in mind, just because they bothered me doesn't mean they will bother everyone. The author's writing was phenomenal and I highly recommend this book.

What a 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐, exciting read! It's a story about the French family - Harry, Alice and their 8 week old daughter, Evie.

Two men break into their home and entered their bedroom. Harry and Alice are awakened and asked where Edward Renshaw was. They tell the men that they've never heard of him. The men don't believe them - so they torment them. They pistol-whipped Harry, assault Alice and threatened to kill Evie. Harry and Alice continue to tell these men that they don't know Renshaw. So before they leave, they tell them if they call the police or tell anyone, they will know and will come back and kill Evie, then Alice and finally Harry. Then they leave...

What happens next is a story of finding out who Renshaw is and what he's hiding. Alice and Evie encounter Renshaw and are on the run, for fear of being killed. Meanwhile, Harry encounters Ruth, who knows what happened and tries to help Harry find his family.

There are so many twists and turns! It's a fast-paced, edge of your seat read! It's a story about a husband searching for his family, in the midst of criminals looking for them.

Tom has written a fantastic story! His attention to detail is spot-on! As you read, you can imagine in your mind being there. I am a fan of Tom's books and he didn't disappoint!! I look forward to reading more books from this amazing author!!

DON'T start this book at bedtime!

Well where do I start, oh yes ...... don't start this at night as your about to go to bed! I was warned not to and thought yeah alright. As luck had it, I didn't start till the following day and now I knew why I was advised them words!

The book opens at a fast heart stopping pace and one that sent shivers down my spine, the pace continues throughout the book, with moments where my heart was in my mouth, brain thinking the author won't go any further with this description only to flick the page and he did. Very descriptive scenes that sent chills down my spine.

How are Alice and Harry French, a couple with a new born baby and a mystery package delivered to the wrong house connected? Whose the mysterious Renshaw that the package is for?

Tom's descriptions of the characters are so good, it made me feel like I knew them personally. They are all described in such detail and for one I loved the way he described Alice, as she was in the early days before meeting Harry, the way she was when they were a couple and how she is now as a mother. A mother that will do anything for her baby!

As the story becomes more fast paced, the descriptions do as well, you are drawn in with every word you read, every page you turn and I for one became fully immersed in the story, especially being a mum to a daughter as well. I could imagine the way they felt when their daughters life was threatened, imagine the lengths I would go to, to ensure she was safe.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more by Tom Bale. I even have another one on my kindle ready to read soon. An excellent book and an author whose work I will be following a lot more closely, along with his publishers Bookouture who have some other fantastic authors whose work I cannot wait to read.

Oh yeah and one more word of advice and one I'll repeat from above DON'T start this book at bedtime!

Truly chilling

I've just finished 'See How They Run' and thought it was absolutely fantastic! Truly chilling and completely compulsive reading. I started reading it before bed (which was a mistake!) as the opening few chapters are gripping and terrifying in equal measure. I haven't read a thriller this frightening for a long time and I can't wait to read some more of Tom Bale's work.

The story really shines a light on ordinary people being dragged into something out of their control and completely opposite to their normal, safe existence. As the story unfolds, it gets you questioning neighbours, twitching curtains and considering how this other, criminal world exists in parallel with normality. The characters are so well written and developed, and I loved the fact they are new parents as it adds such a chilling vulnerability to their story of survival. I am also a Brighton resident and suddenly started thinking of my city as somewhere totally different and potentially very scary!

I really thought I'd found a new favourite author after reading another Tom Bale book, Survive which I really enjoyed. However, I agree wth other 1 or 2 star reviewers, this book is painfully boring. I couldn't get past the first few chapters. It is a skill that lots of authors have to drip feed information to readers, to reveal just enough to keep their interest by revealing some relevant information that intrigues us to read on but many authors get this wrong as in this book. The questions just kept remaining unanswered and the characters were going around in circles... 'Can I trust this Ruth woman?', how many times can you ask the same questions? And this Ruth woman, who is that hostile towards others? When she finally reveals something, it doesn't even make sense and has no relevance to the actual events then tries to pass itself off as a cliff hanger. We were none the wiser. At the point where the wife receives a second package, doesn't call her husband or the police but instead takes a baby to the supposed house of an unknown, but clearly dangerous man, I gave up! I found the book really irritating. I didn't think the characters reacted realistically and as I'm so annoyed that I spent any money on this book whatsover, I'll mention a petty point too. A 2 month old baby would not be in a 'splashy mood' whilst having a bath, she would be too young to recognise water at all. Bore off... Don't waste money on this.

What a book! I was terrified from the beginning. Tom Bale has managed to capture every parent's worst nightmare and make it into a brilliant book. The story is so believable that you will be scrutinising your neighbours for months to come. Harry, Alice and baby Evie could be any of us. This perfectly ordinary family find themselves, through no fault of their own, in the most horrendous nightmare and discover hidden depths they has no idea they possessed. I particularly liked the way that Mr Bale doesn't ignore factors such as the baby needing a feed and a nappy change. These things are so often disregarded in books and I find it exceptionally frustrating that no one ever eats or goes to the loo. I also very much enjoyed the fact that the other family members were worried. It always annoys me when, in a book, no one ever notices that people are missing or acting strangely, as if the victim or perpetrator lives in a bubble. The fact that the families of Harry and Alice became involved made the story much more realistic. This is an exceptionally good story, cleverly written and well narrated. A truly well deserved 5 stars and I recommend that you buy this and listen/read it today

The description of early parenthood will tug at the heart of anyone who has experienced the fierce and tender love that awakens when the sheer terror of being totally responsible for a new life that you love more than your own is awakened with the birth of your first child. Imagine then that the safe nest you have built for your young family is now violated and the lives of all three of you are threatened. The contrast between the most loving and self sacrificing feelings a parent can experience juxtaposed with indifferent and callous cruelty that serves only itself for greed is handled so well, each emphasizing the other to volatile effect. The contrast between a growing menace and sudden violence are again used to great effect, varying the pace but barely allowing the reader a moment to catch their breath. More secrets and twists than you can foresee and a plot that gathers breakneck speed! This one kept me reading into the small hours, desperately concerned for the well being of the characters so skillfully portrayed who show fears, flaws and courage and make for compelling players in a tense and thrilling drama! Even the unique personality of an 8 week old infant is so well observed you can almost hear her gurgling and you'll be holding your breath for her until the end. MASTERFUL WRITING! One of my favourite reads of this year!
