I liked the structure of three narrators because it provided glimpses into the danger that was coming for the two main characters. The entire story had a foreboding feeling, even more so when the psychic showed up. The scene in the restaurant really gave me the creeps, although it led to one of the most swoony lines of the book.
(Tessa, about Luke): Feeling like my heart is about to walk out of my chest, knock on his and ask to come in.
It was easy to root for these two. They've both been through hell and they understand and support each other.
If you're looking for a book with romance, mystery and high stakes, this one is for you.
I have to be honest and say when I read the blurb I expected a little paranormal/psychic aspect to the story. However, this story was definitely not what I expected and I don't mean it in a terrible way. This was an okay read for me and I liked the mystery aspect to the story, but what I honestly didn't expect was the story to be cult like because I didn't get that from reading the blurb. I really did enjoy Tessa and Luke's characters and I enjoyed reading their moments together and even though this story was an okay read for me, it wasn't really a story I would have finished reading if I hadn't signed up for the ARC. It was slow at times but I honestly enjoyed Tessa and Luke. This was the first book I've read from this author so I'm glad I had the chance to read her work.
Mellie's story, interwoven within the chapters on Tessa and Luke, is also a part of what makes this such a wonderful read. Trapped in a very disturbing cult like setting, Mellie's chapters are short but impact the tension and suspense of the story. The reader wants to know what the real story with her situation is and how she has gotten to the point she has arrived at mentally and emotionally.
This is a story about strength and trust. It is also focused on the value of family and the things we will do and give up for those we love to find peace. This is the 2nd book in the Gavert City stories, but it can be read as a stand alone. The characters from the first Gavert City book, Fear Me, Fear Me Not, do make appearances (and I love when that happens in novels!) so the reader has the chance to revisit them and see how their lives have moved forward. As I said, I am a fan of Nowodazkij and I'm very happy that I had the opportunity to read an ARC of her newest novel.
