Editorial Reviews

Glen Campbell offers stunning takes of his career-defining hits on his 2013 album See You There. These gorgeous vocals were initially recorded during the Ghost On The Canvas sessions. Producers Dave Darling and Dave Kaplan were so moved by these powerful performances, they decided to bring a group of musicians into the studio that would complement Glen s legendary voice. The resulting album is at once chilling, uplifting, haunting and spine tingling.
"When Glen heard what they did in reinterpreting these songs, he lit up and was smiling from ear to ear. And I was too, " says Kim Campbell, Glen s wife. "This record is a more intimate and unique take on many of Glen s most popular songs as well as some other gems. The producers took the magic of his voice and showcased it in a whole new way for Glen."
The album's title, See You There, an expression that s been a trademark of Glen's for years, takes on an added poignancy at this stage of his life as do the songs that take us back to the early days of his iconic career.

It was no less that the great Damien Jurado who recently stated that "When I die, I want to be buried with my Glen Campbell record collection. That's how much I love Glen Campbell". It's a sentiment many share and fully endorse. There is no need to dwell here on the fact that this is Campbell's 65th album and that he has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's realistically curtailing any significant further musical output. Some may also point that it re-treads familiar ground in revisiting his greatest hits. But it is the nature of the return to these classics that makes this record so special. It was Johnny Cash in American Recordings who set the template for such records and in "See you there" initially recorded during the 2011 "Ghost On The Canvas" sessions, Campbell has matched that standard. This is no maudlin outing that dwells on his debilitating condition but a celebration of some of the greatest songs penned in pop music sung by one of its most distinctive and best voices.

In one sense this is Glen Campbell for the alternative country generation. Nowhere is this clearer than on his take of Jimmy Webb's greatest song "Wichita Linesman". The original lush string arrangement is absent and instead Campbell sings it as a barroom ballad. His voice still sounds like musical honey and the depth that comes through age adds a juggernaut sized level of poignancy to a great performance. Those other Webb classics are equally well done. "By the time I get to Phoenix" is stripped back to gentle acoustics with the odd strain in Campbell's performance adding to the songs sense of regret. "Galveston" is even more bare bones with the slide guitar and accordion lending it a much more contemplative and reflective feel.

There are several schools of thought regarding recuts of classic recordings and most of them are negative. "See You There", however, belongs to the "positive" school, wherein insightful, caring production and superb curation of the artist's catalog renders not only fresh versions of those hits, but showcases the maturing humanity (and in this case, now, fragility)and depth of the artist they showcase.
In essence, "See You There" is a delightful revisiting of tracks from the numerous phases of Glen Campbell's amazing career and both a wonderful addition and/or introduction to the works of a true musical master. It is fortunate that Glen has landed in such thoughtful and talented hands, and, though I hope it's not his last recording, if it were to be, it's a delicately polished gem!!

The voice isn't quite as strong and the music not as aggressive but Glen sings these songs with all of his heart. I would recommend to anyone who ever liked even one of Glen's songs. Galveston, always a favorite of mine, projected the young soldiers dilemma as he fought for his life. All he wanted was to live and get back to the waters of the Gulf of Mexico and his brown-eyed beauty. Through Glen's voice you can hear the pain and fear in the soldiers thoughts. Get the CD, it's worth every penny.

While physical/mental problems make the likelihood of another album remote, the music loving folks will be the ones who lose. Glen Campbell's voice and guitar are pure listening pleasure. While most of the songs are old standards the See You There brought tears to my eyes.

Read the other reviews already posted here on Amazon for this latest - and what will probably be the final - newly recorded album by songwriter/singer/movie actor/TV variety show host and "good guy" Glen Campbell and you will see that I'm not alone in my praise for this album. I've loved Campbell's work and was lucky enough to see him (and his kids who form his touring backup band) on his Farewell Tour a year or so ago.

When I learned that this album would be the solo recordings of his hits (and a few more) with overdubs of backing tracks, I thought it would be over produced. It's far from that. The producing Daves - Darling and Kaplan - went the other way, giving these well-worn songs a new life by going for the "less is more" approach. And it works. When I saw Campbell in concert, his voice was in fine form, never affected by is advancing Alzheimer's and he played the guitar just fine. It was in remembering the lyrics - to songs he'd sung 1,000 times - that gave him some difficulty and that he addressed with video monitors spread across the foot of the stage.

There are 11 of these new tracks on this CD plus a repeat of "Waiting on the Comin' of My Lord"., with a Mariachi beat. This was an unissued track from Campbell's last album, "Ghost ob the Canvas". I'll point out that there is about a second moment of silence before that bonus track. It you turn off your player first, you will miss it.

The CD is inserted in a tri-fold digipak and contains an 8-page booklet with photos, song credits and the track list.
