My favorite little not-ESP.
5 out of 5 stars
My favorite little not-ESP.
I honestly just do not see myself using any other microcontroller for my non-wifi projects.I had to do some shopping for libraries to use to get everything working but I think most of that was just inexperience on my part. The project pictured above is a four MQ sensor gas sniffer with an OLED display powered by a 5V USB C power brick. The 5V is used to power the sensors and a small fan that pulls air through while the MPU operates on 3.3V.I bought a second set of three of these, the expansion board, and a handful of grove connector cables. I honestly don't know if I will use the expansion board since I have had little trouble experimenting with these with a few I2C devices. The expansion board has a debug interface that might make it useful one day for me.If one does not need the wifi or BLE of an ESP32/8266 then I would recommend this microcontroller. I used YouTube for all of my initial research and the manufacturer's web site and forums afterward. I develop with PlatformIO, but was also able to program using the Arduino IDE.

The devices are very small and perfect for development. The boards come with clear instructions on what libraries and Board packages to load. The USB-C port is nice touch and makes the board easy to use with my normal cables...

The only thing that I would like included are more python examples, whether it is a link or something else. There isn't a lot of documentation since this board is relatively new.

I have Arduino IDE for mac. Downloaded all required files for these boards. Was able to communicate and load a sketch onto the first board. It loaded and ran just fine. Tried to load another sketch to the same board and PORT disappeared. Was unable to communicate with it again. Tried the second board. Was able to load a sketch to the board no problem. Tried to load another sketch to that board and the Port disappeared just as the first board. Tried the third board. Same problem. Now I have three boards that I can't communicate with anymore. The boards do turn on, but no longer can communicate with them. UPDATE 02/23/21 NOTE: FOUND THAT BOARDS WILL COMMUNICATE WITH IDE IF THE RESET PINS ARE PULSED TWICE RAPIDLY. IF PULSED TWICE THE USB PORT FOR THE BOARD APPEARS AND IS ABLE TO COMMUNICATE ONCE MORE. ONE RESET PULSE WILL NOT CAUSE THE USB PORT TO APEAR. Will continue to experiment with these little boards.

I have been using the Xiao microcontrollers for a while.. They are amazing for small size projects, pins can be configured to work as analog or digital, USB-C and good price.

The bad is their damn Bootloader... It is a hit and miss situation, you will have to tap the reset soldering pads over and over to get it to enter on bootloader mode and even after that 50% of the time the Arduino IDE will fail to load the sketch, this is a common problem and one that has been present on the design of the XIAO for a couple of years.

If you are patient and lucky this is a great microcontroller for prototypes... Unfortunately sometimes you can not design a prototype PCB around a component that maybe will work immediately or have to fiddle with it for 40 minutes everytime that you modify the software.

Small and easy to use----This is the smallest Arduino compatible board among all the development boards I have used,
Surprisingly, although this development board is small, it has a large capacity and rich interfaces. Also the size provides enough to be used in a complete PCB project.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great option for HID Devices
Reviewed in Canada on March 2, 2021
Good quality, tiny size, very useful for HID devices such as keypads, game controllers, etc. The USB-C port is a big selling point for me, as most board of similar nature have the older style Mini or Micro USB port.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tiny Arduino compatible microcontroller

Needed a small sized micro-controller compatible with Arduino IDE for a project. This fit the bill nicely. It's 20x17.5mm in size. The pins are spaced to fit a standard breadboard for easy prototyping. See the Seeeduino XAIO wiki page for what you need to use.

ALL I/Os usable, input/output,Refreshing! I have used these units to replace reams of Microchip micros. However, I have noticed pricing going through the roof recently. Too bad. Looks like I'm going back to programming in assembler.

Lovely and so tiny. The 3 pack is also nice because now I have ideas for how use them all.

The only downside is my soldering skills are rough. But practice is great.

3.0 out of 5 stars Powerful little unit easy to Brick.
Reviewed in Canada on March 14, 2021
At first sight the cost and size and what it could do was an excellent deal. I was able to start writing code on it right away. And had many thoughts of projects I can do on it. I did find a major flaw which makes me walk away from it until it gets better. It is easy to Brick the system. Which makes it very unreliable for any projects. You can't have your board not operate just because you turned it on or off a few times. I believe it's the boot loader that has a bug in it. It needs to be rethought. And once it's fixed. This will be an excellent product.
