I have always loved a good fairy tale. Seeing Red: A Sapphic Fairy Tale by Cara Malone hit the right spot with its modern-day retelling of Little Red Riding Hood by The Brothers Grimm.
I thought the book started off kind of slow. It took me a little while to get into but once I got into it I was hooked. Hunter was a great character. She would do anything to keep her family safe. She didn’t want her nephews to have a hard life like she and her sister had. While Hunter worked hard to take care of her family. Piper pulled cons trying to provide. I loved how Piper's character ended up.
I really liked Kiera’s grandmother. I will always have a soft spot in my heart for Alzheimer's patients. Even though it wasn’t Kiera’s main reason for moving in with her grandma I think it became important for her as her grandmother’s disease progressed.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes fairy tale retellings.
Thanks to the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.
Hunter Ross is a beautiful hard-working woman trying to take care of her sister and nephews. She doesn’t have much time in her life for love. Soon things change, when she meets the granddaughter the women she will be taking care of. Immediately, Hunter finds Kiera, Abby’s granddaughter attractive and they begin a friendship. Just when Hunter thinks all is well, the past comes to ruin her happiness. Will she tell Kiera the truth about her family or will she give up on love to protect them?
Kiera Murphy recently moved out of her sorority house after an incident. She is currently living with her grandmother to help take care of her. Abby her grandmother has Alzheimer’s and needs to be watched. Kiera and her mother decide to hire Hunter after meeting her at the coffee shop. Abby immediately takes a liking to Hunter. Kiera begins to have feelings for Hunter. Their blossoming friendship has changed how they feel about one another. Abby makes notice to a specific figurine that is missing and tells Kiera. As Hunter is talking to Kiera about her family’s past, Kiera mentions the missing figurine to Hunter. After that talk, Kiera must make a tough decision, does she call the cops and ruin her happiness or does she find a way to not lose Hunter?
This is a beautiful story about tough life decisions, taking care of family and finding love. Both women were faced with different life decisions. Hunter had to put her life on hold to help care for her nephews and try to keep her sister Piper on the straight and narrow. Kiera had her grandmother’s declining health to think about, which also in a way put her life on hold. But, once Hunter and Kiera met, the sparks flew. I truly enjoyed reading how relationship blossomed from friends to lovers. I loved the build up to their first time. The emotion put into these scenes and the whole story was beautifully done. Their lovemaking was so sensual, as if you could feel every emotion these two women were feeling. Cara has done exceptional with this story. I hope there is more of Hunter and Kiera to come at some point. I also cannot wait to read more of Cara’s stories.
I received an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Seeing Red is a fun take on Red Riding Hood. The characters and story are nicely done. Cara Malone continues to be my favorite writer of lesbian fiction.
