It is a relief to read a book that leaves one feeling upbeat about the human race, written by a man with an outstanding background in medicine, chess, and poker. He is also obviously a loving family man.
As I said, it is different.
And I must add that although I don't know him well, I am related to the author by marriage. If I hadn't liked the book, I would simply not have given it a review.
The longest story (a novella?) is Bamboozle: A Poker Mystery. It is also the most riveting of the collection. It tells the story of an amateur poker player's participation in the World Series of Poker. Day by day, the reader accompanies the main character through the trials and tribulations of big money, competitive poker. There is a romantic sub-plot, which quite frankly should have been better developed.
The stories are followed by a series of essays highlighting the apparent contradiction between science and religion. Whether you agree or disagree, there is plenty food for thought in the essays.
Overall, a worthwhile endeavor.
