La Sera, also known as Katy Goodman from Vivian Girls, has avoided the sophomore slump with SEES THE LIGHT. Tonally, SEES THE LIGHT has two different and distinct modes. This first mode is evident on the initial single "Please By My Third Eye" and "Break My Heart" -- its a brand of loud, raucous garage rock that feels as if it is being fast forwarded. The second mode is a slower, cleaner, more deliberate rock "It's Over Now" and "Love That's Gone". Both of these distinct styles are maintained by Goodman's sharp, concise songwriting and airy voice.

There's not really a bad song on this collection of 10 tracks. At times, Goodman's vocals come across as a little too breathy and detached. Rock-nerds and casual music listeners will find a lot to like here, but there are times when SEES THE LIGHT comes a little too close to pop that it almost feels hollow. With that said, the pop-infusions that these songs have are its greatest strength. Some of the songs here feel more developed than others; songs like "I'm Alone" and "Real Boy" pale in comparison to the rest of the album. They just don't feel like they received the same attention that the rest of the album did.

Fans of Telekinesis, Weezer, or Vivian Girls will love this release. I would recommend sampling this album here on Amazon -- there is a lot to like for most listeners. Recommended highlights to sample: Please Be My Third Eye, How Far We've Come Now, Love That's Gone, and It's Over Now. These songs sound best in a car or any brand of bass-heavy headphones.

I discovered La Sera through an email from "Flavorpill" with their top 10 list for the best upcoming albums of the year. Most of the bands on the list were pedestrian and mehhhh-diocre. I was on the verge of closing the window and deleting the email when I saw the music video for La Sera's Please Be My Third Eye. Katy Goodman is so adorable. The music along with the video just made me want to go out and play. I have been anticipating Sees The Light's release and having listened to the whole album a few times already since I got it yesterday, let me just say that the anticipation was well worth it. The guitar twangs remind me of 60s surf rock music, a bit reminiscent of the Raveonettes as well, and Katy's voice complements it very well.

My favorites, despite me liking the whole album, would be Real Boy, I Can't Keep You In My Mind, Love That's Gone, Please Be My Third Eye... okay nvm, I like them all.

I heard Break My Heart and was instantly hooked, so I took a chance on this as the price was right (only $6). Turns out it's a keeper. I hear a little Best Coast here. I even hear early Weezer on track 3, I Can't Keep You in My Mind. This is catchy (at times dreamy), infectious pop just in time to provide a soundtrack to the coming summer.

I had never heard of La Sera, but kept seeing this on a bunch of year end lists. So, I took a chance with this one and came away very pleased! I have to be in the mood for this kind of music, but she is a very talented artist and I am looking forward to future releases from her!

2nd album out of Los Angeles from member of Vivian Girls—bouncy female vocal indie pop with a
touch of 50s influence and some driving pop/punk rhythms. Cool music, strong & memorable
songs. The band includes members from Darker My Love, Brian Jonestown Massacre, White
Fence, Spinerette. Recalls bands like Blondie, Violens, the Raveonettes, Frankie Rose, Gold
Motel, Blouse, Allo Darlin’.

Not another Vivan Girls album like some might expect, but a definite extension of their sound. This album has a more refined sound and a variety of influences. Just my opinion, but a low point in the album would be the track Real Boy, which gives off a She and Him vibe unless you're into that sound. Otherwise this is a continously good collection of songs.
