Product Description

Amazon.com

The Dreamcast system is, in a word, awesome. Fire up Soul Calibur, and instantly you'll appreciate that the graphics and gameplay are even better than in the arcade version. And Sonic Adventure, with its light-speed gameplay, is sure to wow even the most jaded gamer.

It's amazing that such a small machine (it's about the size of your mouse pad) can deliver such incredible performance. Chalk it up to superior engineering. Dreamcast's only downside is that it comes with only one controller and a demo disc. In order to truly take advantage of Dreamcast's capabilities, we recommend outfitting the controller with a Jump Pack and a Visual Memory Unit. Getting one or more extra controllers is also a good idea, because some of the best Dreamcast games support up to four players at once.

Why it's so cool:

  • Ultramodern components: Custom-made video, audio, and processor technology blows away the Nintendo 64 and PlayStation and puts Dreamcast in the same league as PS2 and XBox.
  • Integrated modem: In another video-game first, Dreamcast comes with a 56K modem. Use your regular Internet service provider and the separately sold keyboard to access e-mail, shopping, and the World Wide Web. Not only can you upload high scores, participate in chat discussions, and download updates and enhancements for your games, but, through a membership to the SegaNet Internet service provider, you can play Quake III Arena, NFL 2K1, and other games against Dreamcast owners over the Internet.
  • The Visual Memory Unit (VMU): More than just a memory card, the VMU is a miniature portable game system that fits inside a controller--so its LCD screen is easily seen by you but hidden from your opponent.
  • All-in-one entertainment: It plays games. It plays audio CDs. It connects to the Internet and lets you browse the Web or e-mail friends. Our note to the cost-conscious: If you have a Dreamcast system, you just don't need a separate CD player or a separate computer. Dreamcast does it all, and does it well. --Mike Fehlauer

Well the one i got is from Dec 1999 and the cmos battery is completely gone, turns on and works fine otherwise. If u know a little about electronics it's a easy fix. I already got the old one out, waiting 4 the new ML2340 battery to get here. And plz note people don't use cr2032 battery lol. The ml2340 is rechargeable the cr batteries Are not... as I've seen people in youtube mod a new battery in the dreamcast using a wired battery holder that's for Cr2032 batteries. Might not be a good thing in the future for those dreamcasts. Been grinding out phantasy star online...well offline lol lately. Forgot how fun that game was. VMU pack also needed new batteries but those are cheap. Takes 2 CR2032 battery. Was surprised i got it for 60 bucks and it's clean to. Doesn't even look 19 years old. Nor did the controller or VMU. I bought PSO used for about 25 bucks. That was with the original case artwork and manual. Only came with the original 56k modem but o well. Not looking to modding it in anyway to have get back online. Probably wouldn't be worth it. Got the pound adapter for it to convert it to HDMI. Needs a usb power supply that's hooked into the tv as well. Can play PSOBB on PC even to this day online and the graphics are great and has better interface then original with ep 2 and 4 as well. Just fun playing it solo on dreamcast haha. Got speed devils online to, wish i could play that online again. Been 18 years haha. I would say i got lucky with this console, besides the battery being dead..but hey i think all of them that exist still in the consoles have done died too so probably a common issue these days with the console.

When I originally saw Sega's stellar Dreamcast in action, the day it launched on September 9, 1999, I remember thinking that console gaming had finally matured and arrived in grand style. Up to that point in time, no previous video game system had the polygonal pumping power or blazing speed of Sega's Dreamcast hardware to produce the spectacular and wondrous visuals that countless people around the globe had been enjoying for years in arcades. Though Nintendo's 64-bit behemoth, along with Sony's colossally popular Playstation were very admirable machines with extremely solid and respectable game libraries, neither came swaggering out of the corner, looking for a fight swinging as furiously, or packed a punch quite like Sega's powerful like the Dreamcast. It was a machine that was truly ahead of it's time and set a new qaulity standard in the industry that was hard to match. While classic, much lauded launch titles like `Soul Calibur', `Sonic Adventure', `Power Stone', `Crazy Taxi', `Hydro Thunder', `Marvel vs. Capcom: New Age of Heroes' and `NFL 2K' showcased the Dreamcasts impressive, jaw dropping, and drool worthy graphical capabilities, it was another launch title by Sega, `Chu Chu Rocket' that reminded the world what helped make the Dreamcast an important part of gaming history. Granted you had to subscribe to SegaNet to take advantage of this heralded feature, but now a person was not only able surf the World Wide Web with their Sega Dreamcast, using the included browser disc and integrated 56k modem, but could also play games online; a realm that was previously exclusive to P.C. gamers. Sega's console is a rock solid and attractive unit that is pleasing to behold and was built to last a long time. The Dreamcast controller is similarly well designed and assembled. It's comfortable to handle for numerous hours, making it a perfect for weekend long gaming marathons. The buttons are well laid out on the right side and colorful, opposite of the analog thumb stick, which is positioned above the D-pad, with index finger triggers on the underside. It also has two expansion slots to accommodate various accessories like `Visual Memory Units', a `Rumble Pack' or even a microphone. The only strange thing about the Dreamcast's controller is that the cord is connected at the bottom, but can conveniently be secured forward on the underside of the unit. The `Visual Memory Unit' resembles a miniaturized version of Nintendo's original Gameboy, with a monochrome LCD screen, positioned above the D-pad, which was next to the `Start', `Select' `A', and B' buttons. Not only could this little marvel save vital game data, but it could enhance the experince in numerous ways too. This could be a mini game, like `Pinta's Quest' on `Skies of Arcadia', raising a Chao in 'Sonic Adventure' or displaying play calls on Sega's awesome 2K sport games. Sega had a smash hit on its hands with the Dreamcast, but it wouldn't have been worth anything if there wasn't quality software that took advantage of the systems powerful, cutting edge hardware that was genuinely enjoyable to play. Luckily, the Dreamcast amassed an admirable collection of classic and beloved games to build a strong library in it's short life that proudly endures today; there is something for everyone. The previously mentioned titles are only a brief taste of the untold hours of fun and adventure that awaits the owner of a Sega Dreamcast. Other classic platters like: `Grandia II', `Jet Grind Radio', `Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver', `Phantasy Star Online', `Space Channel 5', `Shenmue' , `Metropolis Street Racer', `Virtual Tennis' and countless other great games are still waiting to be discovered on the Sega Dreamcast. Nearly a decade since it debuted in North America, it's still thinking, keeping a firm hold of gamer's hearts and imaginations.

This was a good idea for me to buy another Dreamcast since my original stopped working a few years ago. I saw this and couldn’t wait but when I received it, there is only the system with the plug and hd cord with 1 controller NOT 2 controllers. There is NO gun either.

2.0 out of 5 stars Le visuel et le descriptif sont trompeurs
Reviewed in Canada on December 22, 2023
