A beautiful book

This has very color saturated images of Art Deco type style flowers and designs. I will use them as smaller images, as printing out large images will take a lot of colored ink from my printer. You can print out these designs onto a cloth from your printer (Avery makes these, as well as others) and use them as pockets on totes, etc.

This 8 ¼ inch x 11 inch perfect bound softcover book contains 48 pages of images well printed in color. There are no pages of text except the covers. A CD with all 152 images is bound between the last page and back cover in a sealed heavy paper envelope. Each image in the book is numbered, the number being the file name on the CD. All images are JPG in both high and low resolution. Size of the images varies considerably. The long side of the high resolution images generally falls in the range of 1,700 to 2,700 pixels, but some are smaller and some larger. The low resolution images are 24% of that. The license says, "You may use them (the images) for graphics and crafts applications, free and without special permission, provided that you include no more than ten in the same publication or project." The CD also includes the Dover Design Manager, an image viewer and basic editor.

Every image in this portfolio is boldly colored with large stylized graphical elements. Botanical subjects are the dominant theme. The bold, simplified shapes of much Art Deco graphical work is totally absent from this collection. They are surely nice to look at and could be great inspiration for creating original art. Using the images directly, which is how I would typically use them, is problematic. The bold central elements often take up a large part of the images, and in some there is no complete central element. When multiple elements appear, or at least parts of them, they are irregular, making construction of a complete element difficult. The irregularity of these designs, as though they were hand painted (probably true), makes it impossible to use most of them to construct repeatable tiles or extended borders. On several pages the images are arranged in what appears to be artful overlapping patterns. The images on the CD are cut to fit this layout. So, many images are irregular shapes or have corners missing, exacerbating the problem of direct usage. For beauty and inspiration this collection would rate a 5; for my interest, not so high.

I loved Seguy's Art Nouveau designs. I only like this book, as I think Seguy's Deco designs aren't as brilliant as his Art Nouveau patterns. However, I really like the insect designs in this book--I wish all his insects were in it.
