It's a good, legible translation

Well, I'm not sure what book the other reviewers read, but I assure you this translation is actually quite readable. Yes, it has issues. Yes, it's not perfect and yes, the language fetishism can be tedious. But overall it's a very decent translation that is mostly easy to read and enjoy, except for the intrusive Abh language fetishism at times. However, I actually enjoy the Abh language fetishism because I'm a geek like that and I argue that it enhances the experience.

I give it 5 stars because it is arguably the second best Japanese space opera series, after the timeless Legend of the Galactic Heroes. I did not even like the genre until I stumbled upon this little gem. Fiction rarely riles me up, it rarely makes me cry or get furious, but Morioka's writing is so fantastic that with a few pages he can turn me into a gross sobbing mess and make me feel things I will forever be grateful for. I'm a sucker for fictional settings with great world-building and by God, Morioka is a master at it. The Abh are basically the most interesting alien race in the anime/manga/LN media world. The plot, the characters, their exchanges are all superb and highly entertaining. Don't miss out on it, even if you don't like anime that much or space opera fiction.

The book is an entertaining read, with a fairly straightforward story arch taking place in an incredibly complicated universe. Character interaction and development is solid, even among the supporting cast and "villains."

On the whole, this is good classic science fiction of the "golden age" variety. The only real complain I have is that the decision to use untranslated Abh words in the dialogue simply doesn't work. Instead of creating a more absorbing experience, it threw me out of the story by forcing me to flip to the dictionary in the back of the book.

Still, a good read, particularly for people that have seen the anime.

A Solid Start

It is true reading the text with alien words and abstract descriptions of space battles can be daunting. However, I have to admit this first installment does a solid investment establishing the universe, characters, as well as the initial story. It was enough to make me want to buy the second volume!

i must admit i've read the manga watched the anime series now i've read the novel. the novel the manga and the anime each is different each other. they each have one thing more or different from each other. and that what makes it great to get into. if you are a fan of the series i suggest you get all three of them(novel,manga,anime). it is very worthwhile read if you love and enjoy it. i hope this review is help full i usually don't get into writing a review so i usually keep it short.

I first saw the Sekei trilogy on one of the cable networks. I really enjoyed it -- more than most Anime. I have since bought the 3 series on DVD and the corresponding Manga, but I have been looking forward to the translation of the novels on which they are based. This is the first installment and is full of details that had to be left out of the Manga and videos. I really enjoyed it, but I wish they had translated more... My only criticism is that there is a heavy use of the Abh Baronh language in the book. There is a glossary, but I would have prefered seeing the English term with the Abh (in parens, or as a footnote) -- referring to the glossary gets a bit tedious. Otherwise the novel was great and I'm looking forward to Seikai 2.

Banner of the Stars and Crest of the Stars in anime form are classics, very highly recommended. I expected to love the novels. I'm an avid reader yet I found the books unreadable. Other reviewers have suggested the problem lies with the English translation. Buy the excellent anime, available on Amazon; avoid the novels.

Great Sci-Fi universe, wish more would be localized!

All three of these Crest of the Stars books lend a lot to the anime I first watched years ago. These localized novels are very good at giving great detail about the events and background that make up the series. If you saw the anime first like myself, you won't be let down.
