The watch is clearly gray-market, with neither a back sticker nor attached tags. The outer box wasn't original from Seiko but the green inner box was and the manual plus 2 additional links were included. No additional pins for those links were included, however; meaning (if the non-Seiko jeweler I talked to was correct) you'll need more pins from Seiko to add those links. All of this says that the watch was not only gray-market but I was not the original destination for the watch. This doesn't bother me, if true, because the watch is unblemished, was price well and runs perfectly.
There are only two problems that I have with this watch; both design choices by Seiko. The first is the absolutely idiotic choice of putting the seconds hand lume on the *opposite* end of the seconds hand (see that little dot on the seconds hand in the picture? That's what I'm talking about; it's on the opposite end making a seconds count-up/down impossible in the dark). I've heard justifications for it but those are refuted by other Seiko models (the Seiko SKX007 diver has the same seconds hand as this but the (almost) identical SKX173 places the lume on the correct side). It is a stupid design choice by Seiko.
The other concerns the GMT hand. It's a 24 hour hand; meaning that it isn't on the same scale as the hour hand AND it takes a calculation to convert it. Sure, it tells you whether it is AM or PM when you can't see outside BUT how often does that occur vs needing a quick two time-zone reading? It, too, is a stupid design choice albeit one that is standard in the industry. Tradition is not a justification for stupidity.
Those two problems aside, overall, I would buy this watch again with pleasure and without question. This watch is one of several that I own but it will probably get the majority of my wrist time. It is an excellent watch.
Finally, IF you are are more concerned about function and visibility than brand name THEN do consider https://smile.amazon.com/ISOBrite-Super-Bright-Watch-ArmourLite/dp/B007HAFYSY/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1487906964&sr=8-6&keywords=armourlite+isobrite+t100 from Armourlite as well. This isn't an ad for it but I own it, too, and it's similarly absolutely accurate (I've had it for 3 trouble-free years and it has been within 5 seconds a month during that entire time). It's a T100 tritium tube lume; meaning that the lume is *always* present, is super-bright -- without needing a light source like Seiko -- and will be for 50 years; changing the battery only once per decade. It's not as bright as a fully-charged Seiko but it's bright enough and is an excellent (albeit visually uninspiring) choice. Overall, I like the visual appeal of this Seiko better and the Seiko's dial is easier to read but the Isobrite is a *really* good choice if function trumps design to you.
I HOPE this is only a freak and rare defect from Seiko! I have 45 years of nothing but superb service and quality from my Seiko time pieces. I am getting a replacement watch as I write this. If it were any other brand, I would get a refund and look to another brand for my next watch!
Outside of this serious and hopefully rare defect, the watch is as described......awesome looking, VERY stout in its build quality, and just ain BEAUTIFUL!
I will post again after I get me replacement.
My recommendation to those interesting in one of these???....BUY ONE!!
Ok, now I can feel comfortable about updating my review after having worn this WONDERFUL watch since summer 2016.
It is, plain and simple, and above all, A SEIKO!! Superb quality, accuracy, and sooooo easy to set when changing time zones! I went to Asia over Chistmas/New Years, etc.....left the midwest, landed in Korea, changed the watch time in-flight in about 5 seconds (watch still running and therefore was only needing to change the hours). Then left for Manila and had to change it again....that took another couple seconds. Thru hiking, rock climbing, scuba and snorkel adventures, sand from the water and beaches, this watch never did anything but work...FLAWLESSLY! I reversed the trip a couple months later and it was as simple and fast as before! And, on top of that, I never had to adjust the seconds/minutes due to the watch running fast or slow! It has been running 1-2 slow, per month or so.....so I just set it about 5 seconds fast and forget it for months!
The first watch was obviously a very rare fluke by Seiko!
I was able to get one heck of a deal on this watch....but after wearing it 6+ months thru everything, I can say I got a STEAL of a deal!
If you want a quality watch that looks and feels very solid and just plain WORKs, BUY THIS ONE!!
