So far I am very pleased with my purchase. With small wrists, I was nervous that the rubber dive band would be too big and have extra band sticking out the back looking funny. Right now I keep it on the second to the last band hole and it only sticks out about a half inch. I read several reviews about the band being "too hard" and was expecting a really uncomfortable band, however the band is very flexible with the S-wave design in it and it conforms to your wrist shape, making it very comfortable.
One of the best things about this watch is the "lume" or glow of the hands and hour markings. I've heard of the legendary Seiko lume, and this one holds up to its legacy. After being in the sun, walking inside will make your arm look like a glowing nuclear reactor. It's really that bright compared to other watches. I am very impressed. After being fully charged during the day, the lume also lasts into the wee hours of the morning with a dim glow but not too bright to prevent you from sleeping.
The bezel on this watch is interesting. It clicks every half minute and is very easy to rotate, which is great. I would have preferred one click every minute, but not a huge deal breaker. It is a fully stainless steel bezel, which makes it stand out from the other Seiko models with the black plastic insert, making it rather unique.
The crown was a huge reason why I purchased this watch. It's located at the 4:00 position making it very comfortable. The screw-down crown feature is great for those who dive because it prevents the crown from accidentally coming out. The day/date indicator is also very attractive. Being black with white font, it goes great with the black dial of the watch.
Overall one of my best purchases and will be occupying a lot of wrist time.
The watch looks great, manly, perfect size, well made, 4o'clock crown, smooth 120 click bezel, feels expensive.
The band is perfect for the watch -- Stainless bezel sets off black dial and black manly (rugged band) perfectly.
The automatic movement is accurate (-5 seconds per day) -- day date indicators are centered and look expensive with white on black lettering. Lumens are excellent -- I can see time at a glance in middle of night in total dark. The band can be loosened or tightened depending on situation. The movement is amazingly good for a watch in this price range.
I love this watch -- I have had many watches -recently sold a rolex datejust I have had for 15 years but don't wear anymore because it is too blingi ... I have six other good quality watches, now I mostly wear this one -- One SKX171 for every day when I can be rough with it and the second one I will keep cleaner -- Although I will say that the watch I have had for 3 months still looks brand new with no scratches or nicks....
Love this watch..No worries mate...
I hope that by sharing my opinion and comparison of these fine watches, I can help you with your search for the perfect diver / work watch / "beater". If I had known some of the following details..
SKX007 Classic Black 7S26 movement with 40 hour power reserve. "The Classic" at top top of my list.
Black face with white hour markers. Markers have a raised white outline. Thin patch of lume inside the white outline. Second hand is white. Easy to read the time in light and dark conditions. Easy to read date window with white background. Did I say easy to read both time AND date?
SKX171 Steel & Black 7S26 movement with 40 hour power reserve.
Dark gray face with chrome hour markers. Markers have a raised chrome outline. They shine in direct light. They tend to look dull gray in photos. Thin patch of lume inside the chrome outline. Second hand is chrome. Black date window isn't easiest to read, but contributes to clssic design of black & steel. Slightly aggressive steel bezel lends itself to a stainless bracelet.
SKX011 Classic Orange 7S26 movement with 40 hour power reserve.
Orange face with white hour markers. Markers have a raised black outline. Thin patch of lume inside the black outline. Second hand is black. Easy to read the time in bright conditions, less so in dark conditions. Easy to read date window with white background. You pay a premium for the orange and gold and I'm not sure why. But it certainly is nice to look at.
SRP307 Monster II 4R36 movement with 42 hour power reserve. If you have a 7" or larger wrist, this one is worth every penny and belongs at the top of YOUR list. It is a bit large and flashy for me to wear regularly. Manually windable, hackable, and has a nice domed crystal. The Monster's stainless bracelet has no equal. The date window is black to maintain the black & stainless style. Also consider the SRP581 black/blue. Beleve it or not, in 2017 there is now a Monster III.
SNE107P2 Solar Diver -- Solar quartz movement with 10 month power reserve. Inexpensive beater watch.
Black (also radiant) so then dark gray, face with white hour markers. Markers are flat with no raised border. There are little mounds of lume applied to the markers which may or may not be centered. This could be a deal breaker for some. Second hand is white. Easy to read, but date window has black background -- not as easy to read as a white background. "Starfish" stainless bezel is wider, more flashy, and produces more glare than the classic design of the '007 or '171. Seiko 20mm rubber strap isn't as soft as a 22mm strap.
All of these dive watches have excellent lume. The Monster II lume seems a bit better because of the larger hour markers.
All of these are mechanical except for the SNE107 which is solar powered. The mechanicals need to be set monthly and, of course, after they've stopped after 40 to 45 hours off the wrist. The solar only needs to be set a couple of times per year, and the date corrected on short months.
The photos on Amazon are rarely as good as they could be. Some are blury stock photos that could never help to sell a product. Always look at several photos from the Internet before making your choice.
If you are worried that you may be buying a second-rate or gray-market Seiko, just make sure you buy one that is Prime with the 30-day free return option.
On to the original review...
I have been thinking of buying a 007, but since I already have a 011 Orange and a Monster II, I looked at this one again..
I passed on it before because I thought the bezel looked too aggressive and the hour markers just looked dull gray. But I was wrong..
I looked on the Internet for better pics, and when I noticed the silver outlines around the hour-markers I was SOLD. And from any other angle, the bezel looks very much smooth and circular. This model is like the best of the Seiko Monster 2nd generation and the 007. As usual it looks better in person than online. Classic good looks of black and stainless. I love those silver outlined hour markers! My collection is now complete. Really. I'm not planning on buying any more timepieces. This does not, however, rule out gifts.
Bezel action is fantastic and is not too tight. It stands up 1mm over the crystal. This bezel does not produce any glare like some of my other watches. I usually park it at the 5 minute mark to make it look a little smoother.
Lume is almost as good as my Seiko Monster II. It is significantly lighter than my Monster II with its metal bracelet. Honestly, the Monster's bracelet has no equal. But while I feel the Monster looks best, this one is lighter and slightly more comfortable. The rubber strap is a plus because I often work around electricity.
This 22mm band is a little softer and more comfortable than Seiko 20mm bands. The loop really irritated my wrist, so I swapped the top with the bottom. I usually do this, and now it feels fine. Comfortable on the second day.
Jomashop / Watchsavings free shipping got it to my house in only four days. No Seiko warranty card included but there is a 3rd party 2 year warranty.
Very good mechanical accuracy of approx +3 sec per day (on average). Sometimes a little better -- I've been keeping track.
Outstanding value at about $200; I got lucky when the price dropped.
