Tory Brennan and her “viral” friends, who contracted heightened, wolflike senses during an experiment gone wrong (Virals, 2010), attempt to find a female pirate’s buried treasure in this second outing. The quartet is motivated to seek the booty when budget cuts threaten their parents’ university jobs in Charleston, South Carolina. Afraid their “pack” will be split apart, they steal maps, explore hidden booby-trapped caverns beneath the city, and decrypt codes leading to a spooky, uninhabited barrier island, even as they are pursued by nefarious fellow treasure seekers. The action is nonstop and will keep readers glued to this satisfying mystery. Grades 6-9. --Karen Cruze

Positive: Tory. She's obviously the Alpha of her pack, bossing those boys around and getting them to do what she wants. She has good intentions -- she doesn't want the pack to break up, especially since they're only just learning about their powers and they're afraid to be apart, just in case something major happens. Plus, she's got such a sarcastic wit and an amazing brain, just like her famous aunt.
Positive: The connection to Temperance Brennan (Bones). It's a little thing, I know, but I really love when there's a crossover whether it be between series or, in this case, genres. It's like you're in on a little secret, if you've read the author's other works.
Wish: That Tory didn't seem to be talking to the reader at time. I don't know what it is about that style but it jars me and, because of that, it takes a bit longer to slide into the flow of the story.
Overall: A fast-paced thriller, SEIZURE grips readers and pulls them along for a wild ride.
Tory and her three male friends, who live on a South Carolina coastal island with their parents who are workers on another island, a nature reserve and research laboratory headed by Troy's dad, are mutants. They were infected with an experimental artificial virus by their wolf-dog, Coop, and now their DNA contains animal components. They can, under certain circumstances, access special powers that are canine in aspect.
The four youngsters are upset when they find out that their parents are about to lose their jobs because the research lab is about to go bankrupt. Tory hears about an Ann Bonney treasure that has been lost since the pirate lurked in South Carolina waters in the 1800s, and decides to find it and save her father's job.
Complicating the search is an escaped mental patient, Tory's former crush, the richest youngster in South Carolina, and a married tourist guide couple also looking for the treasure.
Trapped in tunnels under Charlotte, the group is shot at, and suffers several other set-backs, including finding Bonney's lost treasure trunk empty, and Tory's dad's ditsy girlfriend's determination to turn Tory into a debutant.
A fun read for anyone (Adult or Youth) who likes treasure hunts, mysteries, debutant lore, or the paranormal.
The kids are determined to find a way to save the center so that they can stay together. Since the research center is on an island near Charleston, South Carolina, it doesn't take long for them to decide to search for pirate treasure. Anne Bonny is reputed to have buried some somewhere in the area. The kids aren't the only ones who want Anne Bonny's treasure and soon find themselves dealing with a number of enemies.
The kids use their various talents to track down the clues and use their Virals powers to get themselves out of a number of dangerous situations. This story was action-packed and should keep any middle grader on the edge of their seat. Along the way, they'll also learn quite a bit about Anne Bonny and the area around Charleston.
I liked that Tory was the alpha of her new pack despite being the youngest of the teens. I also liked that Tory had to juggle her dad's new girlfriend's plan to have Tory take part in Cotillion along with the more adventurous parts of the story. Even Virals have to deal with bullies!
This is the second of a five book series which also has four novellas. I look forward to reading lots more about Tory and her friends.
The book does falter in a few parts, with inflated suspense at the ends of chapters that end up being something innocuous (i.e. "He was being followed.... Oh wait it was just the dog!") but it is at heart a young adults book. You can't exactly fault it for its silliness.
All in all, a great read. I'll definitely be reading the next book.
