Wonderful collection of the works of Lorca. Amazon insisted on having me check off a box regarding my opinion of the "plot" - a moment where their algorithm went a bit wonky, perhaps? Anyhow, I find Lorca to be so achingly beautiful, so evocative, perhaps all the more so for my having read his biography, so I am moved not just by his words on page - which are, again, achingly beautiful - but also for the backdrop against which he wrote them. This is an important collection, and one I hope eventually gains further traction moving forward. Those in the know, know Lorca, but far too few have discovered him. Would love to see his work gain the attention Frida Kahlo has (they knew one another, actually), as it's well-deserved, and as relevant.

This is a compact edition of some of the best of Lorca's poetry. The poems are in Spanish with parallel English text by various translators. Lorca's work is so rich in metaphor that a single English language translation is often not adequate to convey the full meaning. I recommend the supplemental use of a large Spanish-English dictionary, (or a Spanish language dictionary like that published by the Real Acadamia) to give fuller meaning. Some of Lorca's favorite words, like "claro", "blanco", "saeta", and "remanso" have additional and non-obvious meanings that add so much richness and beauty to his poems.

I had this book before in the 1860s wfhen I started studying Spanish literature and New Directions has put in a larger print version which I like a lot. I gave my original copy to my sister so that she could study the master's work more closely also. Therefore, I needed this copy which I like to reread and study anew. The print is larger and some biographical details are left out due to the New Directions change
in format but it is essentially the same book with translations into English that are very good by oted translators and poets themselves. Of course, the original in Spanish is superb and the verse come from various stages of the poet who was shot by the fascists forces in the Spanish Civil War. Thus I needed to buy this copy again. Som omissions were made by the editors who regretted that due to space they could not include verses taken fro Lorca's pays. But still this is a very good purchase.

I discovered his works about 30 years ago, I enjoyed the fact that on the left page the text was in Spanish and the right was in English. Having a bit of Spanish this interested me, and I could think in Spanish how it was written. In the mid nineties an El Nino hit the area and flooded part of my place and I lost a lot of papers books and all my old photos.
So now I found the same book, this may be even an earlier printing. But I wanted the same book, I only know one Spanish poet. But I know composers and artists in all genres. Some of this is when you live 15 miles from a country, it would be insane not to absorb some of that culture. A great Poet in any language.

This book was my introduction to Federico Garcia Lorca more than fifty years ago. The translations from Spanish to English are the best I have come across since then, and I was thrilled to be able to replace the copies that I foolishly lent to people over the years. This one is a keeper.

These wonderfully lyrical and romantic poems span from 1921 to 1936, the year of his untimely execution. This edition include both the original Spanish and English translations (including a translation by Langston Hughes).
I particular like some of the sounds "Poem of the Saeta" "They come from remote regions of sorrow". His trip to New York, produced the notable "King of Harlem" and "Ode to Walt Whitman". The final series of poems on "Gacela of .." and "Casida of the .." only hint at the themes he may have developed later in his life.

I wish I read Spanish. I bet the words sound and feel like smooth velvet. I would love for someone to read it to me in Spanish :) This is a good book. Get it.

Superb Translations

This is the best series of translations of FGL I have read. Poet translators like W.S. Merwin know how to balance Lorca's taste for vernacular flavours with his modernist sensibility. Amazing how the unknowability and resonance of Lorca's imagery is preserved. One of those essential New Directions publications.
