I decided to buy this because of the simple fact that it had Selena in the title. In spite of 20 years gone by since her untimely death, my craving to learn more about this wonderful entertainer and person has only grown with time. There aren't many books about her, surprisingly, so I gave this one a shot in hopes of finding new information.

To be honest, I can't say I didn't enjoy reading most of the book. Cristina had many encounters with Selena and became friends with her, which gives her the opportunity to share the many anecdotes and entertaining stories about the singer. Cristina was amongst the very few who got to see Selena in her casket at the family and friends private viewing of the body.

I personally enjoy reading about the way Selena was off stage and how she treated people. This book has a lot of that. Cristina clearly felt like she was special to Selena and that doesn't come as a surprise because Selena had the amazing quality of making everyone she met feel like they had been long-time friends. She made people feel comfortable and unguarded. This was a special gift that came naturally to her, which is why she was so loved. Her friendliness felt authentic to her closest friends and to her public.

Aside from the moments they shared, I didn't care for the super-natural part of the book. To be honest, this intrigued me; just like anything having to do with an after-life does. However, when the psychic medium made contact with "Selena" and started reciting messages for her family and even Yolanda, it simply didn't click with me. It didn't "sound" like her, if you will. Nothing new about "what happened in room 158" was revealed.

Cristina Castrellón was a friend of Selena's in her last few years. Her new book about the iconic star provides us not only with reminisces of their time spent together, mainly in Monterrey (Mexico), and critiques of public statements made by others after her death, but tellings of putative incidents in which the author, with the help of a person described as psychic, met and received putative messages from the hereafter from the beloved performer. Ms. Castrellón claims that she worked for a talent agency that was hired by Selena, but Selena's sister, Suzette, denies that, and considers what she has written not to be the work of a "friend". While Ms. Castrellón's speculations about the details of Selena's last conversation and the assassin's internal motivations are not without some interest, they do not alter the facts found by the courts, tell us anything new about Selena, nor address the reality and gravity of our loss. In fact, the presence of the reported contacts with spirits of the departed, and their disappointing presentation as fact, not imagination, feeling, fiction or drama, devalues this work considerably, and, combined with Suzette's denial of the professional relationship of Selena with Ms. Castrellón, cast the reliability of the entire work into some doubt. (Also, there is no index, nor footnotes citing sources other than first-hand, nor other apparatus one would expect in a book about an important historical figure.) Fans, especially new fans and fans-to-be, of this unique, charismatic, and irreplaceable artist and soul deserve something more than reports of supernatural encounters with her.
