Do you think you found this page by accident?

I don't think so.

No coincidences. You're intuitive, and part of you already knows this book or a session with me is what you've been looking for.

If your mind is already fighting you, thinking bad thoughts about me or this work, you're onto something! Go beyond mind; what does your heart say?

About the Author

Dave Markowitz is a medical intuitive who has helped thousands on their journey toward wholeness. After years of denying his empathic abilities, his slap-in-the-face moment was when he got drunk without drinking any alcohol.

Dave then began attracting clients who'd done lots of spiritual work but hadn't seen improvements using traditional, alternative, or complementary modalities. He was able to intuit that his client's pains and illness weren't their own; that their empathic abilities made them an "energetic sponge."

Dave knew he could "squeeze" the "sponge" but also knew that without addressing the underlying causes, all pains and illness would be eventually recreated. He then intuited a 5-step process that helps empaths see their gifts as a blessing and not a curse, and also helps them "give back" what isn't theirs.

A native New Yorker with a wry sense of humor, Dave works in-person and by phone/Skype from his new location, Portland, Oregon.

I read this book in one day because it was that entertaining to read. I know I am sensitive because I can feel energy within me and with people who are incredibly unbalanced (like if I stand next to someone with dark negativity around them, I'll want to faint). I also unfortunately pick up other people's pain, whether emotional or physical. The pain is worse if negativity is targeted towards me because it hurts me like a knife stab to the middle of my back and the knife just stays there and festers. For the longest time I actually took these energies as if it were my own and had such a hard time letting go and recovering, which made people think I was being stubborn or that I wanted to feel this pain for attention. It was a couple of years ago did I find out that I was empathic, which I felt explained a lot about why and how I was able feel so deeply. Because I wanted this emotional pain (which resided in one spot in my middle upper back and under my lower sternum) to stop, I decided to work on various types of healing. Seriously, I've tried talking it out, flower essences, energy work like Reiki and pranic healing, and crying my heart out but it either didn't work or was just temporary. It wasn't until I read this book did it put things into perspective for me. To truly get rid of energies that are not your own, you have to send them back to its original owner (trust me this is way better than just grounding it as I've been told to do MANY times to no avail). I tried the Return to Sender exercise that same day and was amazed when I could slowly feel that negative energy that didn't belong to me in the first place find it's way back to its original source. After a couple of minutes I was like "OMG am I really free from this?? Holy crap!Read more ›

I connected with this book immediately and I read it straight through without stopping. It was exactly what I needed. I have never found another technique to help me deal with my intense sensitivity to others. I immediately felt the release happen as I began the techniques Dave shares in Self-Care for The Self-Aware. This book was a real blessing to discover. It has helped me to understand myself better and interact with the world in a way that is much more gentle on me. Learning to release what was not mine was such a amazing gift. Thank you Dave!

What if the health imbalance in your body—wait for it—isn’t really yours, including Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or another immune system matter, and more? What if most of the anger and or depression you feel isn’t really yours either? What the heck am I talking about, you ask? Before I say more, let me ask you this: Is there one person or several people in your life who, when you speak with them on the phone or go around them, cause you to feel drained? Do you avoid crowds? What’s possibly going on is that you may be an emotional sponge—of other people’s emotions! And this is harming you in more ways than you might imagine, including feeling over-burdened in life and not good enough (including how much you feel you deserve to be successful in life, whatever that means for you), no matter how much you do or how much you work on yourself spiritually or metaphysically. Maybe you wear the superhero cape and try to save others who make no attempt to save themselves, and you’re plain worn out by this. There’s hope! And you can find it AND create significant shifts in you and your life, starting now, in Dave Markowitz’s book Self-Care for the Self-Aware: A Guide for Highly Sensitive People, Empaths, Intuitives, and Healers. Dave’s explanations help you to understand what’s really going on. His tools and the Return to Sender exercise help you release and get relief from carrying what’s not yours to carry! This book is small but powerful, and a must-read for anyone who resonates with what’s described above. If you feel like your life isn’t your own and you want it back, or isn’t what you truly desire it to be, get this book now. Read it as often as you need to and free yourself from burdens and responsibilities and health imbalances that aren’t yours. ~ Joyce Shafer, Life Empowerment Coach; Author of I Don’t Want to Be Your Guru, But I Have Something to Say, and more; Publisher, State of Appreciation, a free online newsletter found at [...]

This is a commendably short and to the point read for those who tend to exhaust themselves in their relationships. The excercise "Return to Sender" may have changed my life; I did it ONCE, a couple of months ago, and I hardly recognize myself: I'm getting my work done as well as supporting others, instead of feeling drained and apathetic and see my life pass me by.

Firstly, this book is very well-written and put together in an easy way to understand and apply the principles within the book (and within yourself).

Secondly, I never thought of myself as an empath entirely, until I read this book. I'm a massage therapist by trade and have been so for a very long time. I do my work and move on to the next client, over and over again, not thinking too much about it, other than wanting to help heal my client. However, there have been times that I have felt the pain of my client, to the point of helping heal a debilitating frozen shoulder, then feeling it transfer to my shoulder within hours, putting me out of work for three weeks, whence I had it worked on almost daily to get me back to work. Or, seeing a client who was drained when she came in, then I, after the client leaves, is as drained as her, to the point that I could fall asleep.

Anyway, I digress. The book was fantastic. Dave Markowitz did a splendid job of blending his stories, his research, his education, and his client cases to the reader, giving us very applicable and practical advice and techniques to work with. I give this five stars. Excellent job!
