(Note: I’m not accusing the author of plagiarism — the material in question appears in many forms in the world and can certainly be considered to be widely accepted lore — rather, I’m drawing attention how much I agree with the ideas at hand)
What Zelina brings to the table that’s new, however, will be of great value to many, and that’s a level of authenticity in his personal accounts not generally found in writings of this kind, and that makes his work all the more accessible, since it allows the reader to consider the ideas without rejecting them out of hand based on a dismissal of the associated stories, sometimes tall tales, that at best could often be ascribed to simply getting a lucky break. Not so in Zelina’s work.
There’s one factor that I did not like at all, but others may love, and that’s his frequent reference to YouTube videos. Now, he makes this as easy as can be in a book by providing a QR code to scan with a smartphone and a backup text URL, but for me, if I wanted to watch YouTube videos to get information, I’d be on YouTube watching videos, not on Amazon buying books. As I say, others may love the multimedia content, however.
Altogether a well-written book; it comes across as a bit simplistic in places, but this is likely a result of its translation from Hungarian, a beautiful language that has rather more shades of nuance than English, which doubtlessly caused the translator to have to make some difficult translation choices. Absolutely nothing that hinders communication or pleasantness of reading, though — to me, anyway.
In short, I’d say that if you get even just one useful thing out of this book (I did, and I write similar stuff!) it’ll have been worth the money. In all likelihood, you’ll get plenty.
The book was written by a Hungarian writer George Zelina and inside of his book Zelina wants to explain to us that every person can develop higher level of self-esteem. Self-esteem is something that we all need in every aspect of our lives: marriage, business, relationships of all kinds, etc. The book opens with the author’s description of his early life and his hitting “rock bottom’’. One can only rise after he hits the bottom and Zelina really gave his 110% to show us and to explain to us that it is possible to achieve greatness in life, regardless of how “low’’ we currently are. This is actually what I love about this book most: the author really gave his best and it is visible on almost every page of his book that what he wants to do is to encourage his readers and to show us that we can do it. It is like the entire book is telling us- “come on, fight, work, it is not over yet’’ and I like it because of that. It is a wonderful book. Five stars.
As George state, ‘Self-Confidence Boom is about a young man’s adversity, overcoming his self-esteem problems while developing and mastering different simple self-confidence increasing techniques, to make them part of his everyday life. Each technique works regardless of gender or age.’ In his Foreword we gain the sense that George is a friend, a man who cares and wants to share his success. ‘Based on my own experience I can tell you that self-confidence can be built the same way you build a sandcastle on the beach: quickly with infantile enthusiasm and with visible, impressive results. It also means we need to be aware of under which circumstances we build our castle so that an unexpected tide cannot tear down our hard work. We should take care of it. If it is needed we should put our arms around it and hold on to it because there will be many times when it wants to collapse and whether it remains the same or not, will stand or fall by You only. Almost everyone faces a period in their lives at least once (if not more) when they cannot find their way. They would like to be happy but don’t know how to get there. I don’t want to talk without rhyme or reason, I don’t want to seem like someone who doesn’t practice what he preaches, therefore I am going to analyze how someone can get to the point where they become self-confident, through my own story. Not long ago I was battling with excess weight and my self-confidence was equal to zero. etc’
George addresses the importance of building self confidence by grouping his instructions and help into the following categories - People who activate and deactivate you, Positive and negative examples, Self-awareness, I-awareness, Let’s hit the road!, Goals and their importance, Family bonds, Keep your ear to the ground, Gloomy days, The last of the heroes, Humor has it, One list to rule them all, and A new man’s diary.
Throughout this very accessible book George uses quotations from famous people that reinforce his thoughts, references to websites and Facebook to aid the reader, and manages to keep the entire book in a one-on-one basis, securing our attention and trust. George writes so well and shares his own journey to keep us connected that by the end of the book we want to meet him in person. But then as George would probably prefer, take the time to look in the mirror and see the new self-confident and happy person you have become! Grady Harp, March 17
