I read the book, one chapter per day and did the exercises like a good little student. It has been extremely helpful. I've built the shelves I wanted to build, cleaned up the terrible messes around the house, started projects and making so much progress on them that I actually amaze myself. I've read other books from the so called success literature to help, but this one is the most practical, and easy to read. I almost don't feel like writing a review because I'd be giving away such a useful tool. The book is essentially split in two big sections. The first section deals with fears that people have. According to the author these fears subconsciously interfere with your ability to get things done. Through the exercises you gain insight into what fears you have and to what extent they influence you. I found the exercises useful, but a friend didn't agree that these were the most important fears. The second section has four or five chapters. Each chapter deals with a particular attitude that is an obstacle (such as perfectionism), and provides a tool to help the self discipline process. Some tools are a bit wishy-washy, like visualization and Mr Hyde but after an initial, what is this BS? I tried the concepts and I find them very useful. All in all, a very useful and practical book. I recommend that you read one chapter per day, and when you start a new chapter quickly skim over the preceeding one. --amazon.com customer

I predict that word-of-mouth will make it a top seller for years to come. I really liked the clear explanations and specific directions. The author teaches a super easy self-discipline system. First, he simplifies the psychological process of self-discipline. Then he shows you how to immediately increase your self-discipline power and apply it to anything you want. I highly recommend this book to people who want to turn up their self-discipline a few notches. UPDATE: I re-read this book because I found it so useful the first time, about a month ago. So far on home projects, I have cleaned out the front hall closet, the utility room, and donated 2 carloads of things I'm not using. I'm on Day 15 of my 30-day dietary updates. And for work projects, I have finished 4 out of 6 "backlog" items that have been in the back of my mind for much too long. A few things that make this authors strategy different from others: he gives recs on when to apply different techniques for dealing with "Hyde". For example, visualize weeks/months/days before the task; relax when commencing; reward after physical accomplishments; and self-talk often.
The visualization activity is still scary, because I'm very good at it but still lean towards generating disaster-outcomes rather than nice ones. So I'm still working on that. This book has been very helpful. I also think solving a problem can benefit from several approaches, i.e., other authors, nutrition, etc. So: Steve Pavlina has a nice blog post about visualization, by changing fears to acceptance, then re-visualizing a more realistic and happier outcome. Another aspect is energy -- literally how much energy you have to go about your day. If I'm tired, I sometimes avoid unpleasant or boring things. For that, I have tried an herb rhodiola from Solaray, and found it helped right away. Not a "triple espresso" jolt, but an even boost all day. I have taken it for three months now and haven't experienced any negative effects. And this article from Psychology Today was illuminating about willpower -- rather than a lack of discipline or commitment, it's an over-commitment to a lost cause that makes some people so depressed that they lie in bed and never attempt anything anymore. That author talks about we humans can overcome failures that an animal might not. His analogy is a bear hunting salmon in a stream. After a while of no fish, the bear will give up. But we humans have willpower and sometimes refuse to try another stream. (His example is someone who stays with an abusive spouse because they think the abuser will someday change.) Theodore Bryant clearly describes the situation and gives real world, workable techniques that will help you learn how to be more disciplined. I promise it works if you'll honestly apply yourself. I've read the book through 3 times and have highlighted, underlined, and written many notes in the margins. I highly recommend it. It's a real gem in my library.
