From the Author
As a graduate student in the early eighties, I studied under the foremost researcher on self-esteem, sociologist Dr. Morris Rosenberg. In surveying thousands of adolescents, Dr. Rosenberg had identified the antecedents of self-esteem and shown that the lack of self-esteem results in a wide range of difficulties in life. One day after class, I asked him how an adult who lacked self-esteem could enhance it. He shrugged his shoulders and said, "I don't know." I reasoned that there must be a way to do so, and determined that I would develop an approach to self-esteem enhancement that everyday people could apply.

All people considering buying this book should use the "look inside" feature to see if it clicks with them. It clicked instantly with me.
The section on Automatic Thoughts (ATs) that starts on page 40 is more than worth its weight in gold. Reading that, I couldn't help but be struck by how silly such thoughts are, yet how pervasive. I have used the activities in the beginning section of the book for the past 10 months at pretty irregular intervals, but even so, it is amazing how different my outlook is already. I had scribbled a bunch of notes in the book back when I first read it, and looking at at those now is like night and day.
I am usually skeptical of people who make such bold claims (diets that promise to lose 10 pounds a week, get rich quick schemes, etc). But using this workbook a little per week, or irregularly as I did, and paying conscious attention to thought patterns and recognizing where they stray into the unhealthy, has made a difference.
I've read quite a few books related to healing, self-esteem, personal growth etc, but I had not found a book solely or primarily devoted to self-esteem that engaged me or felt user-friendly. Personally, I disagree with the comment that this book takes too long to "get to the point." I have found the opposite to be true: this workbook is much more succinct and managable than some other bestselling and (rightfully) highly regarded titles that have been previously recommended to me.
Since I reserve 5/5 stars for my favorite books or products, I recommend this book with 4/5 stars.
