Top Customer Reviews
A) The lack of specific and concrete examples to illustrate her approaches. Her "On-Brand" technique would have made a lot more sense if I could have seen cover letters, head shots, web sites and projects of people who were "on-brand." After 400 plus pages of reading about it, I'm still not sure what "on-brand_ looks like.
B) The desperate need for more editing. Gillespie has a tendency to ramble on about philosophical points of view that become repetitive. The book could have been half as long. I would have appreciated a few less "ninja's."
C) I agree there's a snarky tone that made me cringe more than once: "Make sure you're not opting in for failure by showing up at a place that is too cool for you." C'mon! Really? Are we still in high school? I have no doubt that many people in LA act like this but Gillespie makes such a stink about rising above the bad behavior, and in the same breath, like most of the players in the business, condones insipid behavior while they perpetuate it. Infuriating.
What Bonnie's providing here is a road map/instruction guide. It covers everything in an acting career from deciding whether and why you want such a career to how to begin to deciding what type you are which leads to how to brand (market/present) yourself (you are the product) to relationship developing to picking a headshot photographer to all the way to deciding whether and why and when to hang it up.
This is an invaluable resource, along with the attendant web resources Bonnie invites you to use, that I am so happy to have read here, in the beginning stages of my acting career. It's helped provide direction, an authoritative voice/guide, a way through. The value of that cannot be overestimated.
