"Self-Publishing: The Secret Guide To Becoming A Best Seller" not only offers an indepth explanation of the realities of the book market today, it shows you the actual marketing techniques that work online. It shows self published authors the obstacles they face in marketing a self published book.
The author starts off by explaining the mistakes that authors make in promoting their books. Then he shows the most common techniques that authors use to promote, which includes social media sites. The ugly reality here, and the author exposes it in detail, is that the most common marketing techniques that authors use, especially the free internet marketing techniques, just don't work for making a lot of book sales.
This book also includes a chapter that focuses on both the good and bad when it comes to marketing books online. The author explains in great detail exactly how internet marketing works. Authors may want to skip past this part of the book because it's so technical. Don't. Understanding your marketing numbers will help you sell more books.
Once the author takes you through the ugly reality of marketing online, he explains both Magic Quadrant, as well as why the best way for you to market is to focus exclusively on Amazon. The Magic Quadrant will show you how to measure the effectiveness of your marketing campaigns. Then he shows you the best revenue opportunities for making money from your book.
There is a full chapter devoted to how the bestseller system on Amazon works, and the author shows you how to get real readers to your books. He does emphasize in the book that if you want a successful book launch, you'll need a budget to make that happen.
What I liked about this book is that he shows you how to navigate Amazon and take advantage of all the areas of the site, like the Bestseller List, the Searchbox, and the "Customers Who Bought This Item Also Bought." Tips on the Popularity Lists are also included, and the author covers the more obscure, but highly effective ways to market on Amazon that most authors don't know about.
Subscription services to market your book are covered fully in two of the chapters, and this is where you will really need the budget. The author does emphasize that using book subscription services to sell your books will make you a lot of money.
There is so much more that this book covers that will help you conduct successful Amazon campaigns even if you are new to book publishing. There is also a companion guide to this book called "TThe Unofficial Author's Guide To Selling Your Book On Amazon: The Top 5 Cheat Sheet for Self Publishing Authors." It is available as a separate purchase, and it can help you get started quickly if you're crunched for time.
I recommend this book for intermediate to advanced book authors because beginner authors will want to learn how to use all of the features of Kindle Publishing before tackling marketing. For those who want an actionable step-by-step plan, you'll find everything outlined in this book. Highly recommended.
Let’s face it; writers and potential writers have that dream to be on the bestseller list. We’ve written what we believe is a great book, planning to self-publish, but how do we get the necessary sales? Marketing is the answer, but how? That was me before reading Richard’s book. As a writer and editor myself, I wondered about the secrets and the ins and outs of book sites, especially Amazon since that is the place to be. Believe me, I’ve read many books on this subject, coming away frustrated and disappointed, not so with this one. Most books on this topic are usually long, boring, dried out rehashed information with nothing new, however not so here. I was surprised at how much useful info is crammed into 120 pages. The writing style is not a textbook, but engaging and at times entertaining, keeping the reader engaged, wanting to glean all that Richard is teaching us. He shows us the right and wrong ways to promote our books, how to find readers, how to become a bestseller, the secrets of the Amazon search box, the popularity lists and that only scratches the surface as there is so much more. I can’t wait to try out Richard’s own “eBook Marketing Quadrant” for myself! The charts are impressive and easy to read and understand. My only disappointment with the whole book – the links didn’t work, nevertheless with such a minor thing one can’t go wrong with this exceptional find. I don’t believe one can find a better resource on how to market your self-published book. Highly recommended for self-publishing writers, promoters, and those that are still dreaming.
Another quandary I have had in the past is selecting the best two categories for my book. In this book, the invaluable information on how to get your book into “niche” categories is included. These are the small, specialized categories that will earn your book a better ranking.
I have out several books and plan on releasing several more over the next twelve months. This book has given me a plan that I can use on my new releases as well as re-evaluating what I am doing with the books that are already sitting on the Amazon shelves.
All-in-all, this is an excellent resource, whether you are just ready to publish your very first book or your twenty-first book.
