About the Author
Based in London, ANTHONY LYCETT uses photography with a sharp awareness of diversity. He works mainly on portrait series with an almost scientific, methodic approach. The idea behind the Self-Styled project came from Anthony's interest in people who have a unique sense of self, inventive minds and the confidence to express themselves freely. Anthony says, "My work consists of putting each person in front of a neutral background to isolate them from their own background. That way I can focus on the details of their style and character." Anthony talks to his subjects, observes how they behave, decrypts their body language and attempts to understand the relationship they have with their own personal style, while seeking out the difference between their interpreted identity and their real being. He feels anything is possible if one looks hard enough.

This is what I usually do for a job or for other people with my eyes closed. On top of that when I was born the moon was in Gemini so there's definitely more than one of me (at least on my dark side...) Plus for those of us with a "sui generis" look there's always a process with a lot of change or trial and error, until one will eventually find a formula that will work or that at least one would be proud to be portrayed as. Nietzsche put it this way: To become what one is, one must not have the faintest idea what one is.
So I kept on postponing it...
The only link and trust I had was the previous involvement of a few close friends of mine and even some of their looks have changed so much since the day they were photographed for it...
But Anthony's persistence won over my insecurities, and if I had only known he would capture so well what he proposed to, I would have said YES immediately.
So here am I, self-styled Londoner, let's say someone between a feather head Cruella who loves sashimi and a deluded Crawford eyebrow Norma Desmondesque character. A very close friend of mine describes it more simplistically: "SHE'S ALWAYS RICH AND CRAZY!" Oh... I also have a sense of humour and take myself very seriously (just in case you hadn't noticed). Contrary to popular belief, I'm not a bitch... I just happen to look like one!
What I didn't knew and I've learnt doing this was that Anthony Lycett is a brilliant, very talented, down to earth and humble professional, seriously committed to celebrate variety, uniqueness and beauty. If I had stopped to think about that, rather than being concerned about who is in or who is out, or if my hair (I've got the receipts) should have been up or down, I would have never ever had to think thrice.
Thank you Anthony, KEEP GOING.
THE BOOK IS FINALLY OUT! Go and get it...
