This brand goes dry for no apparent reason

I began using these as the product by Blumat. They worked very well, but over time, the line plugged up and we needed to replace them. All of this design will have this problem, so the four or so years of good use was just fine.

We replaced the Blumat version of these watering devices with the WaterMe brand. Virtually all of the WaterMe devices lose vacuum and go dry ... it seems especially while we are on vacation. I am not sure what the problem is since they are virtually identical to Blumat devices. One problem we noted is that the top does not stay on very well. We have to tug at the Blumat tops to get them off. Often, the WaterMe tops come off in our hand when we lift the device out of the pot.

Since we are pretty far past the return window, I am trying to figure out how to make the WaterMe devices hold vacuum. I am trying a little lubricant around the top of the cone now to see if that will help the seal. One good point for WaterMe is the semi-clear plastic of the cone. Once a good seal is established, one only needs to look at the plastic to see if there is still water in the cone. On the other side of that coin is that you need to make sure the reservoir never runs out.

Perfect for smaller potted plants

I have 3 of these probes in my larger pot for my zucchini plants, and one each in both of my smaller flower pots. My larger pot containing the zucchinis is about 12 inches in diameter, and the two smaller pots are about 6 inches long and 3 inches wide. The probes in the two small pots do the job perfectly, the soil is always moist and I can tell just by looking, I don't even have to touch it to tell I don't need to water it.

The larger zucchini pot is a different story, though. I have 3 probes evenly spaced throughout the circular pot, but they seem to be not quite enough. I seem to still need to water the zucchinis by hand every couple days or so. I don't need to add a lot of water, just a little extra. The probes definitely help, and it beats watering by hand every single day, but my zucchinis require a large amount of water and I think the probes are having trouble keeping up.

Also, I live in the Northern California valley so it gets pretty hot up here, usually upper 90's, occasionally reaching 100+ degrees some days. On the 100+ days I usually hand water all my plants to give them an extra boost to get through the hot day.

Worked Wonderfully!

Been testing out a pack of 5 spikes in both indoor and outdoor plants.

2 spikes on heavy water drinking plants indoors in direct sunlight from a window. I started looking for a solution after coming in to work on monday mornings and having my Stevia plant completely wilted even after a heavy watering no Friday evening. I put one spike in the stevia and one in a huge 15+ft ivy in the same window. 3 weekends have gone by and every monday since my stevia has been perfect. No wilting at all.

3 spikes in outdoor plants on the deck have been doing remarkably well. We have a series 3 small sweet pepper plants in one trough planter with 2 spikes and another trough planter with 2 bell pepper plants and 1 spike. We have a really hard time keeping these watered in the Texas sun. These spikes have made a major and immediate difference. The original container we used was only about 1/2 a gallon. That would get sucked bone dry in a day. We're about to upgrade the outside container to a 3 gallon covered setup.

I don't expect the spikes to be able to keep up with Texas heat once the summer rolls around but I'm hoping they will at least keep the plants from dying which has always been a problem in the past round about july and august.

Tips: use a covered water reservoir to prevent loss of water from evaporation. @ work I have a XL jack-in-the box plastic cup. I cut little notches in the top rip to set the water lines in and then cover the top of the cup with a plastic CD disk case to minimize evaporation. At home we're going to take one of those 3 gallon kitty litter buckets and punch a few holes in it for the water lines. They're generally light tight so it should help curb algae growth and the built in lid for the buckets should help with evaporation.

Will be ordering a few more of these spikes for sure.

My Plants are ALIVE!

These worked well for me for a weeklong trip out of town; I have to travel about once a month, but want to keep the basil, peppers, oregano, rosemary, alive through the winter (and for fresh herbs). Asking someone to do it never really worked out well.

I followed someone else's advice/photo here and put my plants atop a plastic tote box with about 2-3 gallons of water. I drilled holes in the lid big enough to drop the ends of the probe in the water. To weight them, I worked a paper clip around the end of the tube, and slipped a bolt onto the clip (the hoses are hidden in the photo on the side, the pens underneath the pans are to keep them from pinching the tubes)

Soil was moist when I got home, there were even blossoms on one basil, and the jalapeños, which have not looked healthy, sprouted a few small peppers. I was tempted to keep on using it, but worry about clogs, so I will set up again in 3 weeks for the next trip.

They really work! But they are a little tricky to get started though so here are some tips the instructions don't tell you:

1. Fill the stake by dunking it under water.
2. Use your mouth to suck water through the tubing before you put the cap on.
3. Place the cap on the stake UNDER the water (the idea is to eliminate air bubbles anywhere in the system).

The water level in the stake should always remain totally full. I was able to see very quickly (less than an hour) if one of them started draining. If the water level falls then the system has been compromised and you should start it over using the tips I outlined above.
