K-Gr 2—Period, Question Mark, Exclamation Point, and Comma are four friends with very different interests who are searching for a plan that will please them all. Period wants to read a book. Question Mark likes butterflies; Exclamation Point only wants to do loud, exciting things; and Comma is preoccupied with food. Readers follow along as they try several activities, until a new friend shows them how to combine all their ideas into a perfect plan. A useful teaching tool, the book explains the meaning of different punctuation marks and provides many examples of their use. The characters and their speech bubbles each have their own color and speak in sentences that contain their own type of punctuation. Their faces convey a wealth of emotion and several well-placed details add elements of discovery to the reading. Unfortunately, the grayscale line drawings are rather spare, and on several spreads the perspective is slightly off, with the Semicolon lurking in the distance seeming to be smaller than it should be, or with parts of it hidden behind trees that are actually in the background. VERDICT Though based on a clever and useful concept, the dialogue is repetitive and the illustrations would benefit from more refinement. Recommended for purchase for collections with a specific need for books on language instruction and punctuation.—Laken Hottle, Providence Community Library

My 5 and 7 year old love repeating the commas lines especially, and saying "comma" between each item! So you can see this book really helps the rules of grammar stick!
Thanks to Innovation Press for sending an advanced review copy. All opinions are my own.
This is the story of four friends. Period's the serious one, Question Mark is always confused, Exclamation Point is hyped-up on caffeine all the time, and Comma's brain can't get past the breakfast table each day. All this selfish thinking creates plenty of problems for these buddies and almost breaks the party up for good, until a newcomer arrives to show them how much better life can be when they all work together.
This book is loads of fun -- the minimalistic illustrations allow the characters to ooze personality and are the perfect vehicle for a book on grammar.
And as if the fun examples throughout the book weren't enough, at the end is a special 4-page section to reiterate the rules for each punctuation mark along with additional examples.
I wish I'd had this book back when I was still in the classroom, because it would have been the perfect way to introduce these special marks to my students.
This book is a wonderful addition to your personal (or class) library. It is definitely my new favorite title to use when introducing punctuation marks to young learners!
