What makes this collection (along with its companion volume) special is its origins in Philadelphia's Erotic Literary Salon, a monthly event where featured authors and open-mike participants bring their words to life through live readings. Those who have read a lot of other erotic-literature collections will find familiar voices here in the form of widely published authors; but also in these pages are striking voices that one might encounter only in the context of the ELS. Variety is also a hallmark of SenSexual in terms of literary form, with some pieces falling outside the usual short-story (or poetry) formats most usually found in erotic-lit collections. Like the live event that it represents, this book is a distinctively eclectic and stimulating experience that aficionados of the genre are likely to find rewarding.
Disclosure: I have been a featured reader at the Erotic Literary Salon and appear in the book's acknowledgments.
This anthology is from the author's Erotic Literary Salon, where people read or perform various sensual or erotic works they've composed. The pieces range from a few lines to 5-6 pages in length; the Salon now has a 5 minute limit, but didn't in its beginning. Whether fantasy or documentary, these stories tell of heartfelt (and often groin-felt) desires and acts and memories. Poetry, artificial insemination, bondage in a hotel, exotic dancer's regular customer, poem, keeping a marriage lively, shared self-exploration, four poster bed bondage, endless teasing, can't forget a recent lover, camping threesome, love letter to a stranger on a magazine cover, letters to genitals, collectively written poems, obsession over a new lover, first-sex-out-of-jail girl, a first-time evening of domination, Tantra, sex nearly in public, love letters from 77 years ago, intimate exchanges over Skype, a hot gangbang, a fling at an office party, student-teacher passion, sexting, terrified virgins, campground sex, police interrogation. Honest, real, tender, hot, elegant or dirty, romantic or primal. Some draw from deep pain, to vent the demons that haunt us. Some drawn from the peak of ecstasy (and I don't just mean the obvious). Laughter and tears. Punishment and caressing. Articulate and scholarly to guttural. Connecting societal violence and sexual repression. Amusing tales of real relationships, not Penthouse fiction. The poem had a life of its own, "swept into these scenarios." Learn about `psycho-somatic ministry.' "You are raw power ... you hold my very essence." Tales from a hundred journeys of self-discovery, fantasy, delicious rememberings, body exploration (yours and/or someone else's), reliving relationships, and "desire overriding inhibition." Tender cuddles to hardcore, gay/straight/groups, it's all here.
At quick glance, the cover of SenSexual Volume One might speak to the book being just another volume of hot stories that are flooding today's erotic market. But the cover, like the anthology, deserves a much closer look.
The man and the woman seem to be immersed in sensual foreplay. But they are not simply your average male and female cover hottie, with the focus on some sexy boobs or well-defined abs. Their smooth bodies seem untainted. Their intertwining of limbs is deeply passionate. Their heads to the side, the man looking away, the woman with lids closed does not show them to be blind to their inspired passion, but truly in the throes of it, feeling it from within.
Then you open the pages to the first piece of the book, written by a woman in her 90s, about a man and woman of comparable age enjoying a deeply sensual connection and you know for sure that there are many words to match the erotic depth of this cover.
Vulnerability, intimacy, trust. Without these three emotions it would be very difficult to have true, deep feelings. You see it in the cover art. You see it in the words.
SenSexual Volume One is a collection of erotic short stories, anecdotes, and poetry that take you on a trip full of true depth. What is most striking is the honesty and purity of the emotions depicted with these written words. It is not the work of writers looking to shape their work to meet a set of pre-requisite genre demands, to grind out specific sexual content to satisfy an editor, to pad the length of their work to meet a stringent word count. It's all from the heart.
Many of the writers included in this volume are ones who have attended, or at least follow Susana Mayer's Erotic Salon reading nights: some professional writers, but many who have other jobs and write because they love it. This love, this intensity, this passion comes out during every third Tuesday of each month (trust me I've seen it first hand). How delightful now to have a volume that transports you to those wonderful Salon evenings in downtown Philadelphia.
An added bonus to this book, are the delicious back stories of each piece: the writer who traveled to the middle east and receives her first pubic waxing, the girl who remembers the first naughty thing said to her as a child, the woman with a dark secret finally revealed to her husband.
Hitch a ride on this Sensexual magic carpet and be prepared for a unique and intimate journey. A must read!
