...you must read Harry Caudill. Often given credit for triggering the political attention paid to Appalachia in the 1960's by the likes of RFK, Harry Caudill understood the heart of Appalachia like no other. A small-town attorney and legislator from Letcher County, Kentucky (thinly disguised as Slaughter County), the author also understood the dark side of entitlements: the political favoritism, the over-dependence of the poor on one political party, and the unforgiving toil of coal mining. This book, although written as fiction, is as enlightening as the better known "Night Comes to the Cumberlands" and the book remains relevant to the politics of the 2010's.

Jesse Stewart's books always propel us back to the Depression or post WWII and we view these simpler times as if watching an episode of the "Walton".
