Haunted houses are scary enough without knife-wielding clowns. Especially murderous knife-wielding clowns. So thinks Ellison Russell, single mother, artist, and reluctant sleuth.

Now death wears a red nose and Ellison is up to the blood-stained collar of her new trench coat in costumes, caffeine, and possible killers. Who stabbed Brooks Harney? And why? Money? Jealousy? Drugs?

With Mother meddling, her father furious, and her date dragged downtown for questioning, turns out Ellison’s only confidante is Mr. Coffee.

I love that this series is set in the early 70's. It's funny to read about things like leaving the phone off the hook. This next chapter in this series is also just a fun, easy read. It will hold your attention and keep you guessing until the end.

What mother can't relate to a missing teenage daughter? While I wanted to giggle at Ellison's predicament - wandering a scary "fun" house for Halloween in search of her missing daughter, the genuine concern that something terrible might have happened was enough to keep me in check. This was probably my favorite book of the series. I enjoy all the characters, even Frances. Although, at times, Ellison's daughter tries my patience with her "stereotypical" bratty teenager persona. It seems mother and daughter make 3 steps forward and 4 back frequently. I'm actually more entertained by Ellison's mother, especially because more and more Ellison seems less inclined to toe the line.

As always, the mystery is well plotted out and the end result is an absolute page turner. I wish I could make the books last longer but I plow through each one pretty quickly. Engaging characters, great story lines. Romantic interests are there but they never dominate and the reader never feels the need to rush the romance along - it's just not the point of the book, but definitely fleshes the story and characters out all the more.

If you haven't read anything from the rest of the series - don't start here. The development of the main character is such a major part of the enjoyment of the books.

Exciting, romantic, filled with characters I swear I know and most of all , witty. Witty as in sometimes I smirk, sometimes I smile and lots of times I'm laughing out loud. But - its all in the middle of a terrifying event. I would have been younger than Ellison in the era she has placed her series and so I would have been Grace's age. Though my dad was a country clubber it was because of his golfing skills not our finances so I was not included and sadly he died when I was seventeen. I love the throwback references to styles and music and wonder how they lived without cell phones. Most of all I love Ellison 's strength and the way she is raising her daughter after all she went through. Honestly, it's just one groovy series!

This is the fourth book in Julie Mulhern Country Club murders series. Our heroine has another set of harrowing adventures involving a murder at an amusement park. As with all of Mulhern's stories, there is a great deal of humor mixed in with the action and very amusing repartee between her friends and her parents. Ellison Russell is filled with angst, trying to be an independent feminist, while all kinds of external forces involve her in improbable but very humorous situations. During all of this she demonstrates keen insight into the motives of the murderer and solves the cases while the police are puzzled and eventually come around to her solutions. There are no steamy sex scenes so this novel is suitable for late adolescents. While this novel has elements of feminist thought, I appreciate the insights the author gives into the struggles that a single woman has and also the insights into raising children and interacting with others while always trying to be honest and honorable. This is an excellent book and I look forward to future books in this series.

If only Grace hadn’t missed curfew that night. Then her mother, Ellison Russell, wouldn’t have gone to the Halloween haunted house to find her.

Stumbling into the creepy interior, Ellison is stunned when a clown, who seems to be bleeding, calls out her name…and falls into her. Dead.

Standing behind him is another clown, who quickly disappears.

Thus begins another tale that seemingly places Ellison in the recurring position of finding dead bodies. She calls Detective Anarchy Jones, who by now is a good friend and possibly a potential lover who believes her story…and even when the body is no longer there, he sets off to find it.

Send in the Clowns (The Country Club Murders Book 4)  was another delightful story in the Country Club Murder series, and, as always, I found Ellison funny and engaging. As the mother of a teenager, she has her quips down pat. She can ground her daughter without losing a beat…or her sense of humor. She regularly converses with her Mr. Coffee, which she believes is the only reliable “male” in her life. She is annoyed that her father, as well as another potential suitor, Hunter Tafft, and the ubiquitous Anarchy Jones, all seem to want someone to manage her. She would prefer to manage her own life.

In her country club set, she has friends…while others are judgmental gossips. Her best friend Libba is dating a man, Jay Fitzhugh, whom Ellison has decided is too boring for words, and not good enough for her. Could the feeling she has about him signify something else?

Solving the mystery of who killed the “clown,” who turns out to be a young man named Brooks Harney— a disappointment to his wealthy family, but who seemed to be turning his life around, and just in time for his inheritance—kept me turning pages, even after I started to suspect a number of possible individuals. Could one of Brooks’ siblings have killed him? Or could someone from the drug world he was leaving behind have targeted him? The eventual reveal surprised me, but then again, not entirely. 5 stars.

I have read several books in this series and this is my favorite so far. I know the characters and the story line just flows. The protagonist is very likeable and interesting. She does have one bad habit - she finds bodies and feels she has to solve the crime. And she has two "suitors", which she is just not able to handle after the murder of her cheating masochistic loving husband.
